Richard was my medical school classmate. Since we had the same first and last names we were always getting each others' mail. I remember Richard as a nice fellow. He seems to have been a very successful surgeon in the greater Chicago area. In many ways he was a better man than I

I just saw this obituary today. Believe it or not I was in Richard´s class in med school. I got in the habit of always using my middle initial. Sorry to hear this. He was a nice guy. Nicer than me

I worked with Dr. Lind at Woodstock Memorial and have rarely encountered another human as kind and patient, nor surgeon as gifted as he was.

I am deeply saddened to just now have learned of the passing of Richard Lind. We were medical school roommates for 3 years at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Rooming with Dick was one of the great gifts in my life. It is not a surprise to me that this brilliant, humble and ever so caring man made such a mighty mark in this world. Never saw him so happy as when he first met Joanne. They were made for each other. My condolences to all his beautiful family. I am hopeful that you have found comfort in all the great memories of Dick, all he gave to you and all you gave to him. Sincerely, Roger W. Helfrich, M.D. Denver, Colorado

I happened to be using google the other day when I learned that Dr. Lind had passed away back in the fall. I had joined Dr. Lind's practice immediately out of residency, still naive as to what the world of being a surgeon was outside of residency.

He was the most genuine man I have met in my time both in and out of medicine. His devotion to not only his practice, but to his family was a trait that I promised myself I wanted to emulate for the course of my career.

In times where interviews for surgical practices were telling me about how hard I was going to work and how i was going to miss family events, Dr. Lind made a point to tell me to make sure I attended all of my family events and to be a good father.

I promised him and I can continue to assure you that I plan to continue to carry on what he told me told me to do.

I am sorry to hear of his passing.

I know this may be late, but I hope Joanne and his sons are doing well.

I still have the lamp he gave me when I joined the practice, it continues to be my reminder of what he represents to me and I will continue to want to try and be the surgeon he was

I was fortunate to work side by side Dr. Lind for many years in Surgery. The care and compassion he had for his patients showed from his excellent surgical technique as a surgeon to his "bedside manner" Pre and Post-Op. He treated all of the staff with respect and was not a man to participate in "idle gossip". His mind was on his patients and he could not of given better care to his patients than me did. Dr. Lind was a person who was easy to like and you couldn't help but to Respect him as a Professional as well as the person he was. He is deeply missed. My heart goes out to his wife and children for their loss. I'm thankful I was fortunate to know and work with such a wonderful human being. Your work is done here on earth, however the Lord welcomes you with open arms. May you RIP Dr. Lind and thank you for being a part of my life.

I WAS HONORED TO SERVE DR. LIND AS A CARDIAC PACEMAKER REPRESENTATIVE FOR MANY, MANY YEARS AT NIMC AND MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. EVERY SURGICAL PACEMAKER IMPLANT WAS DONE PERFECTLY. MOREOVER, DR. LIND WOULD FOLLOW THE PATIENT INTO RECOVERY AND BACK TO THE PATIENT'S BEDSIDE TO REASSURE HIM/HER THAT THE PACEMAKER WAS OPERATING JUST FINE!!! HE CARED FOR ALL HIS PATIENTS AND AS FAR AS SURGICAL SKILLS HE WAS THE "BEST OF THE BEST." HE WAS ALSO A WONDERFUL HUSBAND, FATHER, AND FRIEND TO ALL HE MET DURING HIS LIFE'S JOURNEY!!! I WILL MISS YOU, DR. LIND, AND YOU WILL BE IN MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ALWAYS. GOD BLESS YOU DR. LIND.

What a tribute! My husband and I were at the funeral Mass for Dr. Lind, and I want to tell you how emotional it was hearing his son read his father's unfinished letter. It had to be so difficult for his boys to finish that letter. It was amazing to hear just how close and special his family was to him. It was evident how much he loved his wife and boys. My heart goes out to his family.
Dr. Lind was an awesome man and dedicated doctor. My husband was a patient of his for several years. The end result was surgery, and Dr. Lind showed such comfort and compassion. We were pleasantly surprised that Dr. Lind, himself, made all the follow up calls to my husband telling him the results of the tests that were taken. I have never been around such a wonderful doctor. He will be missed by everyone he knew.

To Joanne and his sons, We offer our deepest sympathy. You will be in our thoughts and prayers.

DEATH LEAVES A HEARTACHE NO ONE CAN HEAL,
LOVE LEAVES A MEMORY NO ONE CAN STEAL.

Sincerely,

From the first day I worked in surgery with Dr Lind, back in the late 80's, he walked into the OR with this hood cap on his head and his wedding ring tied into the strings of his scrub pant, I thought, this is a very precise man. Years went by, and the ritual was still the same and so was his work. You will be very very missed, Dr. Lind .
Rest in Pease, Amen

Dr. Lind was the most kind-hearted, caring surgeon our family has ever met. He operated on my husband several years ago and was the main reason my husband recovered. God bless all of you.

To the Lind Family,
Your husband/dad was truly an angel on earth. During my daughter's senior year in high school, she almost died from a car accident. A loving, mild-tempered, skilled doctor ask me to give my daughter to him - he was going to do all he could to save her life. It was not the only time. After being away at school for 1 1/2 years, a devastating illness got her to the school's clinic where an inexperienced medical personnel diagnosed my daughter with liver cancer. I did not know who else to call; Dr. Lind's gentle face came to view. I called, he saw my daughter immediately, and once again, proved that his patients were in his care for life. I have always thanked Dr. Lind whenever possible, as well God every night, for the gift of life. Each day I see my daughter enjoying her life and laughing her infectious laugh, I pay my gratitude this amazing man. Thank you Lind Family for giving your dad every day to the wellness of his patients. Heaven is rejoicing in this most special angel now among them, we here are missing this most special angel every day.

Dr. Lind was the surgeon who operated on my husband two times and was the most caring person. When my husband passed, he was consoling. I appreciated his sense of humor as was displayed with the many trials my husband went thru when he lost his leg. He helped make the transition less painful.

I worked with Dr. Lind at Centegra for 10 yrs and I was also a patient. He was one of the most dedicated doctors/surgeons I have ever met. He truly cared about his patients. He will be sorely missed. R.I.P Dr. Lind.

I was a new nurse when I first met Dr. Lind on the telemetry floor. I have to say he was very intimidating but after I developed more experience and I wasn't so nervous, and I knew what he was looking for, I came to respect him greatly. I always said if a family member need an vascular surgery he would be at the top of the list for them! He was very talented and cared very much about his work. The world is losing a masterful surgeon and a great person.

I got to know the Lind family through school and basketball in Woodstock. I had the pleasure of working with two of their boys in my classroom. Dr. Lind was a kind, humble, compassionate man which were traits that were passed along to his children. God bless the Lind family at this time. You all are in my thoughts and prayers.

The perfect photo in my opinion...

My deepest sympathies to Joanne and family. Dick was a high school classmate and always had a friendly and kind presence. He was truly the epitome of a nice guy. I have read all of the condolences here from Dick's patients and colleagues, and the tributes are touching. I knew Dick mostly in high school and knew then then that he would be the best in his profession. The tributes confirm he was that and more. May he enjoy the great blessings he deserves as he continues his journey.

God truly sent an angel here for 63 years and it was his time to return to heaven. 63 years is far too short but God had a greater plan. Dr.Lind was an amazing surgeon that I was so privileged to work with and care for his patients in ICU as well as Same Day Surgery. He was a kind, smart, & gentle soul. You always knew he would be there for you and the patient. He always treated us with respect and he went above and beyond for his patients. Dr.Lind, I sure hope you know how special you were. No one will ever replace you. Thank you for being one of the best. I will always remember your surgical gown pull card with everything you needed to know on it. God bless you and your family.

I will never forget the Sunday night Dr Lind came into my four month old sons hospital room. After fifteen hours of trying to get him hydrated, Dr. Lind told me he may not make it through the night. Dr. Lind had tears in his eyes and told me he wasn't done fighting for my son. He scheduled a five a.m. surgery for my baby, bumping back the first scheduled patient of the morning. He spent close to six hours with my four month old in that operating room. He sent a nurse out every hour with an update, knowing I was anxious.
My son just celebrated his thirteenth birthday thanks to Dr. Lind. I see his surgery scar daily and am reminded of Dr. Linds fight to save my son.
May you rest in peace Dr. Lind. Thank you for loving your job enough to fight for my baby.

Dr. Lind was one of my favorite physicians. He had such compassion for his patients and the staff he worked with. I was privileged to work and care for him. Thank you for taking the time to teach whenever possible and to always have a smile on your face. To his family, thank you for supporting him throughout his career and throughout life. It showed in his daily routine how close he was with his family and the love he shared for you. I wish you peace and comfort throughout this time. You're all in my prayers and will continue to be. Dr. Lind was one of those angels that if you were lucky you would of either worked by his side in surgery or would of known him as a friend. I was blessed to of known him, his wife and boys. The Lord knew what he was doing when Dr. Lind came into this world. He was a gentle soul that had a kindness that touched so many lives. I too was touched by cancer and he was a positive light for me as I journeyed through it. Hi smile and sparkle in his eyes always made you feel that things will be alright. He had such a love for his family that was always seen. I will miss him but have the faith that I will see him again. God watch over Joanne and the boys as they walk through this sadness and keep them close to your heart.

What a privilege and honor it was to have met and have been able to work with Dr. Lind. What an amazing man! His passion for his work, his patients, the nursing staff, and everyone he came into contact with was witnessed daily. I understand through my faith and belief that Dr. Lind's "job" was done here on earth in God's eyes but in mine, who will miss him so unbelievably much and will walk around with a broken heart for a long time, and a feeling of emptiness, just wasn't ready for him to go. Having had the privilege and honor of working side by side with him in surgery for nearly 27 years at NIMC, and hearing his soft voice, his little giggle when he'd joke around with us, watching the gentle, unhurried grace of his hands during surgery, the sparkle of his eyes when he smiled and the feeling of his hand in mine as he held it until I fell asleep the day he did my surgery, I wished and prayed with a heavy heart that it just wasn't true the day I found out he passed away even though I knew it was inevitable. In my eyes he was a hero...a Superman, who gave Hope to everyone of his patients. My dear friend Dr, Lind, thank you for being you. The world has lost a one in a million man but your legacy will live on. Peace be with you and your family.

Dr. Richard E. Lind, MD, a man of few words who practiced his surgical skills with preciseness and a reassuring gentle heart, In all my years of practice referring patients to him for surgical procedures not one ever complained about his care, he was virtuous. I related that to him at his hospital bed during my last visit a few days before his passing. His response was with the usual humble smile, "I don't know about that." As I left his room, he nodded "Thank you for coming, I appreciate the visit." I am glad I did but I still think I did not thank him enough for all the right goodness in him.

We love you Dick.
