December 1, 2021

Today is December 1, 2021. I came across the story of the tragic school fire at Our Lady of the Angels which occurred on this day in 1958. The archived photos I viewed broke my heart but the heroism of Captain Richard T. Scheidt, other firefighters, rescue workers, and many compassionate individuals lifted my heart. May God bless the Scheidt family and OLA survivors abundantly.

Captain Scheidt allowed me to ride on Engine 45 in the mid-70's. He knew my father, Lt. Bob Vrchota(CFD). He let me work with the engine crew and on working fires. All this gave me the experiences I couldn't have gotten anywhere else. It helped me throughout my 30+ years with Addison Fire Dept. He was a respected man. He will be dearly missed.

AS MY FIRST OFFICER ON THE CFD I WILL ALWAYS REMMBER "DICK SCHEIDT" AS ONE OF THE BEST SMOKE EATERS I'VE WORKED WITH , AND A MAN WITH STRONG WILL AND SOFT HEART.
HE MADE ME A BETTER FIREFIGHTER AND PERSON BY HIS DEVOTION TO THE JOB AND HIS FAMILY.
THESE LAST FEW YEARS I ALWAYS LOOKED FORWARD TO SEE HIM AT THE BRIGADE BREAKFAST EACH MONTH. HE ALWAYS HAD A BIG HANDSHAKE AND HELLO.

When I opened up the Tribune and saw this brave man’s photo I knew exactly what I was going to read.
I am a survivor of the OLA fire as well as a twin sister and older brother all attending the school on that tragic day.
My prayers are with the family. Mr. Scheidt in my eyes will always remain the bravest man on earth.
I had to sign the book to try and put closure on the traumatic memory which has been imbedded in my thoughts forever. Mr. Scheidt can now join all those brave children who will be waiting for him with open arms.
God Bless
