I am a former student of Mr. Thompson's. I had him both in 6th and 8th grade at Hadley. I am 33 years old now and have tried on many occasions in my life to find and thank him for everything he did for me as a student.

I will never forget his definition of what science is ("figuring stuff out"), all the laughs, but, most importantly, his stern talking-to's that I absolutely needed as a kid. I know he spent many, many days after school with me and I know he sacrificed some of his own family time to do it.

I found myself back in Illinois after being away for 15 years and just now tried to see if he was still teaching and came across this page... I wasn't even sure it was the right man at first but reading through the comments, I said, "yep, that was Mr. Thompson. He was definitely a funny guy with a big heart."

I wasn't able to thank him in life, but I would hope that his family would see this and know how deeply he touched a student's life. Rest well~

Deb,
So sorry to hear of your loss when we ran into each other today. I still remember the weekend when Bob and I drove down to SIU to check out the school for him. Who new what would develop between the two of you after that. Also, our chance meetings with the two of you during our pregnancies. May you find comfort in the wonderful memories you have of Bob as husband, father, and friend.

Dear Debbie and family, I was so saddened by the news of Bob's passing. I have fond memories of you and your family around the Thompson's. I pray to God to give you strength in the next days and months to get you through this loss. May you be comforted to know that his last hours with all of you were the best gift our Lord could give you before He took him under His wing. May time heal your pain and help you move on one day at a time. Sincerely,

Dear Thompson Family:

At the national office of Science Olympiad, we are all saddened by the sudden passing of our wonderful colleague and fellow educator, Bob. He was a tireless volunteer for the Illinois Science Olympiad and the national organization, working at every level, from competitions to workshops. We are especially proud of Bob's connection to the students in the Chicago Public Schools, who all benefitted from Bob's careful teaching and mentoring in all the building events for the past several years. Bob was full of fun, mischief and energy, and he will be terribly missed by all of us. He was a good man, and we were honored to know and work with him. Much love to you all, The Science Olympiad Family of Gerard & Sharon Putz and Jenny Kopach

Bob was my neighbor. I often would see him in his 'shorts' getting the paper in the morning or cruising down the street on his motorcycle; always with a wave and a smile. So very sad to hear the 'block' will be missing this wonderful man. Every neighborhood needs a man like him. Prayers for Debbie and the boys. God Bless.

I had Mr. Thompson as an 8th grade science teacher and was briefly a colleague of Bob's when I taught at Hadley in the late 90s. Bob was one of the funniest teachers I ever had. I also learned a little science. He will be missed.

Debbie and boys, I am so sorry to hear of Bob's death. I remember many funny stories that Deb shared involving Bob's sense of humor. I know his family will miss him greatly. Please let me know Debbie what I can do to help at school. Your family is in my prayers.

Bob Thompson was a great volunteer at The Field Museum. Museum visitors enjoyed talking with Bob in the Restoring Earth exhibition, and teachers and students learned so much from Bob on his tours of the conservation hall, or at the dinosaur Sue. His fellow docents liked to work on projects with Bob, which included creating a behind-the-scenes tour. The volunteers and I are very sad to learn of Bob's death. He will be missed so very much.

Bob Thompson was one of my favorite people. I got to know him as a colleague at Hadley Jr. High, and from that he became a friend. We had so many inside jokes, he made me laugh all the time, and he was an example of a caring teacher who took their job seriously. He spoke of Deb and his boys all the time, sharing pictures, graduations, accidents, and other family adventures. From the way he spoke, it was obvious how much his family meant to him and how incredibly proud he was of each of his boys. Words cannot express how sorry I am for your loss, and how honored I am to have known Bob and to have been called "friend" by him.

God bless you all.

Debbie, Matt, Andrew, Chris and all of Bob's Family and Friends,

My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you. Bob was one of the funniest and entertaining guys I have ever known.....arguably
the most intelligent Thompson brother (no offense Dave). I will
keep you all in my prayers in the coming days.

Robert Cloutier Thompson, my remarkable friend of 44 years; loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle; inspirational teacher and industrious volunteer; perennial student; master of sarcasm and quick laughter; now riding the wind on some fantastic kind of cycle we can't even imagine and teaching the angels the correct pronunciation of "zoology"-- we are all the richer for having shared our lives with you and now the poorer in your absence.

November 25, 2012

Debbie and family,
Dad and I Love you all very much. May the Lord give you the strength and comfort that you need. We loved Bob very much. He was our favorite son-in-law. God Bless you.
Love Mom and Dad

Dear Debbie and family,
I am in shock and my heart breaks for all of you. My memories teaching with Bob at Hadley were some of the best of times. HIs love for his family was always so obvious, and he always had time to share pictures and stories of the boys.
He knew who the "boss" was at home, and he loved her so
dearly. Again, deepest sympathy.
