Samuel Behr Obituary

Samuel Behr, M.D., 96, beloved by all who knew him. Sam Behr died Wednesday, August 30, 2006 at home. Sam was born in Rockford on October 20, 1909 to Celia and Joseph Behr, the fifth of eight children. He was a graduate of Central High School and the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where, as an undergraduate, he was a participant in the Alexander Meiklejohn Experimental College. Sam was an outstanding athlete throughout high school and college. He was quarterback of the Wisconsin football team for three years. During his third year, Sam was the recipient of the Big Ten Medal of Honor, given to the student-athlete who distinguished himself both on the field and in the classroom. In addition to his football accomplishments, Sam was a shot putter on the track and field team. Between 1929 and 1931, Sam captured five career Big Ten titles and was named three times to the All American team. Sam went on to medical school at the University of Wisconsin. In 1932, he married Della Sinykin of Madison, WI. The couple moved to Chicago, where he completed his medical training at Michael Reese Hospital, specializing in orthopedics. In 1939, Sam and Della returned to Rockford with their growing family, where Sam opened his medical practice. In 1942, Sam entered the military as a commissioned officer. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, both at home and overseas. After his service overseas, Sam received an honorable discharge so that he could return to Rockford to assist with the 1945 polio epidemic. Sam re-established his medical practice in Rockford and became a founding member of the Rockford Medical Clinic. He practiced orthopedics in Rockford for 55 years and remained active in his practice until he retired at the ripe age of 85. During his medical career, Sam earned a reputation among his peers as an outstanding and compassionate physician. Sam Behr was beloved by his patients, his staff, and all who came in contact with him. In addition to his contributions as a physician, Sam and Della were both active in the Rockford community. Della founded the Pink Ladies of Rockford Memorial Hospital. Both loved golf, played together regularly, and were long-time members of the Rockford Country Club. Sam was also a member of the University Club and the Standard Club of Chicago. With all of his achievements, what most sustained Sam Behr throughout his long life was the deep love he shared with his family and his warm sense of humor. He could always tell a funny story, twist a word, and put a smile on your face. Sam was married to Della, his lifetime companion and support, for 68 years. He is survived by his three daughters, Barbara Kupferberg, Jaynie Kane and Patti Behr (Donn Alpert); eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and his best friend, Ben Newson. Sam was preceded in death by his wife, Della, and all seven brothers and sisters, Isadore Behr, Philip Behr, Louis Behr, Sarah Glick, Ann Alter, Rose Wish, and Benjamin Behr. Also preceding him in death were two sons-in law, Lloyd S. Kupferberg and Jud W. Kane. A special thanks to Hospice Care of America and the caregivers who filled his home with kindness and the careful attention he so deserved. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 3 p.m. at Temple Beth-El, 1203 Comanche Drive, with Rabbi Binah Wing officiating. Visitation with the family will precede the service from 1:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. Burial at Hebrew Cemetery. The family prefers that instead of flowers, donations can be made to ''The Sam Behr Memorial Fund'' (University of Illinois College of Medicine) 1601 Parkview, Rockford, IL. 61107, Attn: Mianne Nelson. All the children in Rockford, who had broken a bone or two, were soothed by the fact that "now we can go see Dr. Sam." My mother went to high school with Dr. Behr and used to tell me funny stories about how she and Dr. Sam and Izzy Rubin used to cut up in class. He was a really good person and a delight to know. I have visited his grave twice when I have been in Rockford, and I always leave a stone to let him know I was there. Thank you, Dr. Sam, for being who you were, to all of us.

My sympathy to the Samuel Behr family. Certainly Dr. Behr lived a very full and rich life. Dr. Behr did extensive reconstructive on my right hand and fingers inn the late 1950 and then again in 1975. My youngest brother was named after Dr. Behr, Samuel Behr Murry.
