Sarah Sullivan Obituary

Dr Sarah A Johnson passed away peacefully at home in downtown Chicago, surrounded by her family, following a prolonged and private battle with cancer. She was a pillar in the field of medicine as a revered physician, as well as an inspirational mentor for innumerable students, residents, fellows, and colleagues. She had a fierce commitment to family, friends, and her patients. Her curiosity and ingenuity combined with own personal integrity, self-discipline, and tenacity were unparalleled.

Sally was born in Monmouth, Illinois on March 28th, 1941, to the late Mary and Raymond Johnson. She was the middle child of three siblings, leaving behind her older brother Stanley Johnson (Maureen Kilkenny) and younger brother Steven Johnson (the late Cheryl Johnson). Sally attended a one-room country schoolhouse at Muddy Corners, attended Kirkwood High School, and graduated from the University of Illinois Champagne-Urbana in 1962. She knew as a child she wanted to be a physician and realized this dream when attending medical school at the University of Illinois in Chicago and graduating in 1966. Not surprisingly, Sally excelled in medicine, was Chief Resident at Cook County Hospital in 1970, and by 1978, at only 36 years old, she was named the Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at Loyola University Medical Center. She remained in that role for the next 18 years, prior to taking over as Director of the Cardiac Cath Lab at Alexian Brothers Medical Center, a position she held for the subsequent 19 years. Sally garnered great respect from the medical community as a pioneer in percutaneous intervention and cardiovascular medicine performing some of the first balloon angioplasty, coronary artery, carotid, and abdominal aortic stenting. She was one of the first female interventional cardiologists in the country, if not the world.

In 1969 she married Dr. Henry Sullivan, her former intern at Cook County Hospital. She passed her love of medicine on to her son Dr. Ryan Sullivan and her daughter Dr. Theresa Sullivan. She is survived by her husband Henry, her children Ryan and Theresa (Niall McCrann), her grandchildren Henry Raymond (4), Ewan (11), Jack (14), and her dog Harry.

She will be remembered fondly for her elegance, endless passion for medicine, and her warmth and kindness to those closest to her. She threw magnificent parties, ran marathons, fixed delicious meals, and appeared to have endless energy for her true commitment of living her life to the very best and fullest. She loved fast cars, high heels, and a perfectly made ice-cold martini. She enjoyed the sun, the beach, her garden, and was adamant that she would always live near the water. She danced to the sounds of the Bee-Gees and Aretha Franklin, and Henry was her only partner for a any slow dance to Louis Armstrong. She adored her youngest grandson as he brought her endless joy over the last 4 years. Sally's absence will be felt by all those impacted by her unique commitment to life. Her dedication and love for her patients, friends, and family will be greatly missed.

A public visitation will be held on Friday, April 16th from 1 pm-6 pm in Lake Geneva Wisconsin, at Derrick Funeral Home, 800 Park Drive 53147. A private memorial will be held at a later date this summer. Sally asked that in lieu of flowers, all donations be made to the Peritoneal Research Fund, AHN Office of Development, 4818 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA15224 - please include her name on the donation/envelope or accompanying note.

Dear Dr. Sullivan,
It was because of you that I am 48 years old and healthy. If it were not for you and your wife Dr. Sara Johnson, I would not have the healthy heart I have today. I remember going to see Dr. Johnson and she had my medical records pulled from Loyola when you did my surgery in 1975. And I also remember her letting you know (while I was in the office) that "yes I have your patient here. It´s been two years." I was I trouble that day! She will be greatly missed! Just learned of the very sad passing of Sarah. Years ago I was an internal medicine resident and Sarah was my attending. Beautiful self assured professional competent human funny and pregnant..... she was everything I aspired to be. The patients loved her. A true role model. She touched my life in a major way that I will never forget and I am certain she never knew what an impression she made on the many young trainees.
My condolences and prayers for Henry and the children and grandchildren.

Dr. J. was, quite simply, one of the most wonderful people I have had the pleasure to know. I loved working with her, every late night, every call in, there was something to learn and a patient `Mama´ to teach you. Even better were the fun times we had outside of work, both in Chicago and Lake Geneva! She truly knew how to entertain, and I will miss her greatly. I will say I burst out laughing at fast cars and high heels! There will never be another like her. Much love to you, Dr. Sullivan, and to the rest of your family.

Sally and I shared an apartment together while she was doing her internship at Cook County Hospital and, during the riots in Chicago after Martin Luther King was assassinated, she was escorted to the hospital from our apartment by the National Guard to attend to those in need. She will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to know her.

Sally was known to me through my Irish family at Lake Geneva, but she was also my mother´s physician for many a cardiac cath, and her extraordinary talent and bedside manner were pivotal in my mother living many more years than she might otherwise have had. Condolences to her family, and especially to Henry [who, I must add, also did his part for my mother as he performed her bypass.] May you all find comfort and inspiration from her wonderful life.

We are sending our deepest condolences and much strength and love to Hank, Stanley, Steven, Ryan, Theresa, Niall, Henry, Ewan, Jack, and Harry. Your tribute to Sally was beautiful and touching. She was an amazing mother, physician, and individual. A woman of fortitude and accomplishment who inspired many other women in a time when female role models were few and far between. A wife, sister, mother, and grandmother who loved heartily and was a tremendous and loyal source of support to her family and friends. Sally´s zest for life and her beautiful smile that lit up the room will be terribly missed. It was always at Sally´s table that you wanted to be. It was in her company, you felt kindness, comfort, and joy. Her lovely spirit will not be forgotten and lives on in all of you. Take care of each other. May peace be with you.

Henry and family, my deepest sympathies to you all, having read of Sarah's passing. For my brief sojourn at Alexian's, it was good fortune, a privilege, and, I suppose, just dumb luck that I was able to have as brilliant and kind a consultant as Sarah at hand when the chips were down. Quite a one-two punch when the case involved you as well, Henry. My gratitude for Sarah will be perpetual. The sheer pleasure of having such a gracious person as a colleague will never tarnish nor diminish. Again, to all her family, my condolences at this time of loss. I have faith that through the strength of family and the Grace of God, you will find solace.
