Steve was my roommate freshman year at Princeton. There were three of us, all fresh first year students away from home. We shared a suite at Witherspoon Hall: myself a Canadian; a wonderful energetic Chinese fellow from Hong Kong; and Steve, a fine mid-Western American gentleman. We three had great debates on all the important political and philosophical issues that should arise in that learning environment. I always came away with respect for Steve's deep, thoughtful and reasonable analysis. That will stick with me forever. We had a brief but fun reunion at our 25th. Thanks Steve and my sincere condolences to the family.

Steve recruited me and was my mentor. He taught me how to be a lawyer. We tried a two-month case in Arizona together. He was a good friend and a wonderful man. He will be missed.

Steve was a brilliant trial attorney and a wonderful person. He truly enjoyed his time in the courtroom. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Steve and to learn from him.

Had the pleasure of working with Stephen Carlson at Sidley Austin for several years. He was one of the most brilliant legal minds and kindest people I ever met. A great loss to the legal field and to the entire world! Condolences to his family and all who knew him!
