STEVEN DIMAS Obituary

Steven "Steve" Dimas, age 61, a 25 year resident of Naperville, IL died Saturday, June 23, 2012 at Edward Hospital, Naperville after a five year struggle with lung cancer. He was born April 10, 1951 in Chicago, IL. Beloved husband of Carol Dimas, nee Cortina, whom he married December 9, 1972; loving father of Cassandra (Martin) Connolly of Oswego IL, Eric (Jessica) Dimas of Chicago and James (Jessyca) Dimas of Lisle, IL; adored grandfather of Max, Gina, Logan, Phinneas and Frederick; devoted son of Martha and Sam Dimas; dear brother of Ronald Dimas; son-in-law of Therese and the late Armando Cortina of McLean, VA; brother-in-law of Joe (Dabney) Cortina of McLean, VA, Tom (Kristy) Cortina of Reston, VA, Marie (Craig) Platenberg of McLean, VA and James (Mary) Cortina of Annandale, VA; fond uncle of many. Steve grew up in Lincolnwood, IL and attended Niles West High School where he played varsity baseball. He attended Loyola University and studied pre-med and played varsity hockey. After his undergrad, he attended Northwestern University for his training in Respiratory Care. Subsequently, he became an instructor at the university for over 10 years. During that time he published in many medical journals and co-authored The Essentials of Respiratory Care. He became director of the program at Northwestern and lectured both nationally and internationally. After his academic career he accepted a position at Foster Medical and then went on to co-found Stat Home Care, a company that cared for patients with respiratory needs, throughout the Chicagoland area. After he sold his company, Steve retired and pursued his passions of spending time with his family and friends, golfing, reading, and philanthropic pursuits. Steve waged a courageous battle with Stage IV lung cancer for almost 5 years, defying all the odds. His devotion to his wife Carol, his children, his grandchildren and friends was exemplary. Steve embraced each day and lived it to the fullest. He will be profoundly missed. Visitation Tuesday, June 26, 3 to 9 p.m. at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, June 27, 10 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 1500 Brookdale Rd., Naperville. Interment: Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside, IL. Carol,

Jonathan and I were extremely saddened to learn of your immense loss. While we did not have the fortune of meeting Steve, we were able to sense his deep love for you and your family through your stories, such as going to Disney last summer. It has been a privilege to read about him through others' postings.

We have been amazed at the strength you have showed over the past few years. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, your children and grandchildren in this unbelievably difficult time.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.
I hope this verse proivdes comfort.

We are standing on the seashore.
A ship at our side spreads its' white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean.
She is an object of beauty and strength.
We stand and watch her until at length she appears to hang like a speck of white cloud where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.
Then someone at our side says: "There, she is gone."
Gone where?
Gone from our sight. That is all.
She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left on her way to her destined port.
Her diminished size is in us, not in her.
And just at the moment when someone at our side says: "There, she is gone."
There are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout:
"Here she comes!"

With love,
Michelle Dolan

As a very good baseball catcher/hitter and hockey player nicknamed "Rock" with a statue-worthy physique and better-than-matinee idol good looks, punctuated with that omnipresent warm, beaming smile, perhaps Steve's most outstanding quality was his unexpectedly gentle, always good-hearted and very friendly manner. What a combination! He was truly one of a kind. Carol and your dear family, you have my deepest condolences.

Dear Sam, Martha and Family, one of the greatest injustices in life is for a parent to have to bury one of their children. I read some of the wonderful things people were saying about Steven on line and it just verified something that I learned over a half a century ago when we were altar boys at St. Nicholas' Church and that is that Steven Dimas was a kind and gentle person. Our world has definitely suffered a great loss. We offer our deepest condolences. Tom Treslo and Family.

Dear Carol,
Do you remember as far back as Bloomingdale quad homes and friends who drove to Jefferson School together? Do you remember Steve selling a black Ford named Moon to a neighbor and pal? I do! I remember Steve's smile and dreams and how he put up a screen door on the babies' room so the cats could stay part of your family. I remember love of you. Know that his spirit will always be with you and that you will always be loved.

To Carol and the Dimas Family,

We have lost a most incredible person in Steve. I worked with him for most of my time at NMH and his wisdom and kindness far surpassed his years. He always seemed to know what to do. After I left NMH I missed the daily interactions I'd had with him, but he was always with me as I learned from him the ability to be more patient and see through things to their essence.

I'm also sorry that I hadn't kept in touch all these many years but I hope the memories and recollections here and elsewhere bring you comfort during this sad time.

He was truly one of a kind and we will all miss him very much.

I was deeply saddened to receive news of Steve's passing. He was a Prince among Men and I looked forward to seeing him at board meetings and other events. Despite his monumental struggles, he never gave his problems a second thought, only wisdom to help or ease the pain and suffering of others.

He will be missed. My condolences to Carol, his children, parents and siblings.
