I have never met Vivian, but I have been teaching her philosophy and pedagogy for a number of years in the early childhood degree course here in New Zealand. My class felt quite sad when i notified them of her passing. She has shaped the thinking of many budding early childhood professionals and will do this for many years to come. My condolances to her husband and family.

I had the opportunity to meet Vivian once while working on a documentary about the social pain inflicted by ostracism and rejection (The film was called "Reject;" thank you to Ruth Thomas Suh for that opportunity!). It was shortly after the 2008 election, and all of Hyde Park seemed to be thrumming with the sense of new possibilities. Our time with Vivian amplified this sense of optimism, but my fondest memory of all was of the moment Irving who had hidden himself away while we were filming so as not to distract us re-appeared at four o'clock, just as we were wrapping up. Ruth and Vivian were still going over some logistical matters, so I was happy to speak with Irving while he was waiting. He explained that unless one of them was traveling or there was pressing business demanding their attention, he and Vivian always took a break at this hour for a glass of wine or sherry and conversation. He looked across the room at his wife of 50 years and said to me, marveling, "Isn't she amazing?" She was. They were. I think of Vivian when I think of kindness and inclusion and respect, and what better tribute can there be. May her influence carry us through these unkind times. Sincere condolences to the extended family.

I am so sorry to learn about the passing of Vivian Paley. I never met her, but I knew her by reputation and through her writings. I taught kindergarten and first grade for thirty-three years and subbed for another twelve years. Mrs. Paley had a big influence on my teaching and I greatly admired her writing. My condolences to her family.
