It was 25 years ago, the summer of 1983, that I enrolled in a summer class at Loyola University Chicago and first met Professor William Bates. The impression that Bill made upon me was that of a great man, humble, honest and of great faith.
I looked up to him and he returned my admiration with his kindness and friendship. We became fast and good friends. I was included in many important parts of his life. His late wife Katherine and Bill allowed me to visit and live with them in their home in Ireland - an adventure I will remember fondly forever.
My entire family send our most sincere and deepest condolences and sympathies.
I will miss Bill.
Kate, your father, and your mother were wonderful people and gave the highest example of what goodness means and can do for people.
Bill Bates was the chair of Loyola University's Sociology Department. I thank God that I enrolled in that class, it helped me finish a double major at Northwestern but more importantly, I met a mentor and made a friend that will keep my belief in all things honest and true.
