William Carsley Obituary

William Edward Carsley passed away, unexpectedly, on August 26, 2021. Bill was born on May 21,1939 to the late Joseph and Fern Carsley and spent his entire life in Chicago, having attended Mount Carmel High School and DePaul University, where he earned three degrees. He loved referring to himself as a "triple demon." Bill received both a BA and MA in English from the DePaul College of Liberal Arts and Science. He then taught and coached several sports at both Weber and St. George High Schools. He earned a JD from the DePaul College of Law in1969.

Upon becoming a lawyer, Bill worked in the City of Chicago Law Department for more than 37 years, where he served with great distinction, having received numerous awards and commendations. He proudly and honorably served in the US Army/Illinois National Guard from 1965 to 1971.

Bill was truly a Renaissance man. He was an avid supporter and long time season ticket holder of his beloved Cubs, Bears and DePaul. He was inducted into the DePaul University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008. Bill attended numerous other athletic events, including Olympics, Super Bowls and Final Fours. His interest in movies, plays, politics and everything and everyone he encountered was boundless. Bill traveled extensively, with the love of his life, Marianne Parrillo, making lasting friends all over the world.

Bill was a life-long learner; he was constantly reading and was able to discuss and express thoughtful opinions on any subject. Bill believed in the lively art of conversation. Whether you agreed with him or not, you knew he was intelligent, well informed and always open to new ideas. His many endeavors included writing letters to the editors on wide ranging topics, which were frequently printed in the "real newspapers."

To say that Bill had many friends is a gross understatement; everyone knew the "Coach" as he was affectionately called. He made friends wherever he went, whether at Wrigley Field or a local pub or in Ireland or China because he treated everyone with respect and showed a genuine interest in all. If a life well-lived is measured by how we are loved and respected by those we meet along the way, then Bill's life was remarkably well-lived. He was unique, always fun to be around, but also a caring, thoughtful soul who will be missed by many. Bill is survived by his beloved best friend and soul-mate, Marianne Parrillo, and brother John(Joanne) and sister Joan.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bill's name to Mount Carmel High School and DePaul University.

Mass will be held at Nativity of Our Lady Catholic Church at 653 West 37th Street in Chicago on September 11, 2021 at 10:00 am. Immediately following will be Bill's Celebration Of Life at Connie's Pizza at 2373 South Archer Avenue in Chicago.

Marianne I'm so sorry to hear of Bill's passing. I met him in the late 60's playing basketball at the church at Seminary and Lill. His group had the court after mine and if they were short he would ask some of us to fill in. Later I played softball with him for Connelly's tap. I saw you and Bill at numerous DePaul basketball games. After moving to Arizona I would see you both on TV during games. Long after I met Bill I was going thru a grammar school scrapbook and found "a wish for graduates" my sister cut out of the paper for my 8th grade graduation. It was written by Bill. I still have it.
Bill was a very special human being and a positive influence on my life. The world would be a better place if contained more people like Bill.
I'm very sorry for your loss.
