George Turnbull Obituary

GEORGE TURNBULL 1927 - 2016 George Turnbull died at his home in Capay on Thursday, July 21, 2016 after a long illness. He entered into rest peacefully, surrounded by his beloved family. The youngest of six sons, George was born in Blackhill, England on May 11, 1927 to Henry and Gwendoline Turnbull. In 1929, the family emigrated to America and settled in western Pennsylvania. A naturalized American citizen, George served his country, first in the United States Maritime Service during World War II and then in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict. He was very proud of his adopted country and his service during her time of need. He loved to travel and as a young man in the late 1940's he left the northeast and set out to see the west on his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. He worked a variety of jobs including ranch hand, mining assayer, wildland firefighter, sales clerk and gas station attendant as he traveled the country. He settled for a time in Hollister, California and enjoyed life in the rural California of long ago with his oldest brother Fen. After serving in the Navy he returned to Pennsylvania to pursue a degree in Fine Art on the G.I. Bill. He graduated with High Honors from Carnegie Mellon University, later receiving a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Southern California. He met Raphael (Rae) Marie Prudente in 1956 while attending Carnegie Mellon. They were married on October 4, 1959 and the union bore two children, Ian and Gwynn. In 1964 he moved his young family to California to start a new life in the west that he loved so much as a young man. He became an award winning graphic designer and international award winning calligrapher. Granted the title of Professor Emeritus, he retired in 1989 from a long and distinguished career as Professor of Visual Communications in the California State University system. He then returned to his passion for fine art painting, first focusing on rural "Old Northern California" farm and ranch life. He then turned his artistic attention to the working cowboy and scenes of the Great Basin of the western United States. In 2005 he and his wife Rae were instrumental in forming the Orland Arts Commission and the Orland Art Center Gallery. He designed many of the public art projects that enhance our community. George is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Rae Turnbull; son Ian Turnbull (Paddy); daughter Gwynn Turnbull - Weaver (Dave); grandsons Jacob Anthony Turnbull and Daniel Henry Turnbull. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Henry Wood Turnbull, Sr. and Gwendoline Jane Turnbull; brothers Robert Fenwick Turnbull, Ernest William Turnbull, Henry Wood Turnbull, Jr., Thomas Scott Turnbull and John (Jack) Turnbull. An outdoor memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at the Turnbull residence in Capay, located at 680 Fifth Avenue, Orland, California 95963. In lieu of flowers, George's memory may be honored by making a donation in his name to the Orland Arts Center.

I came across this while thinking back of my favorite, and most influential instructors while at CSULB. I have had an interresting art career, and owe it to those instructors. Our class was sad when he told us he was moving to Chico, but I'm happy to read of his wonderful influence there.

George Turnbull was the best design instructor I ever had. He was instrumental in my success as a professional when I completed my studies at Cal State Long Beach. I kept in touch with him years later. I think of him often as one of the people that made a huge impression in my life.

I'm Richard Jacks, an early student of George's (1965-66). In 1975, he asked me to teach one or two upper division classes per semester at Long Beach State. I did that for 13 years while I built my advertising agency. The last thing he told me was to make a million dollars by age 40. I did, but it took me an additional 5 years.

I'm long retired now but I have owed my career to him. He taught me how to really think through the creative process.

I'm deeply saddened to learn of his passing. My best wishes to his family.

Dear Rae,
I am a total stranger to you -but I must tell you that you have been in my thoughts for many years - In the 70's I discovered your beautiful book "Woman To Woman" in our library- I hand copied several pages - Most precious to me are the ones with these lines- "for I am an Autumn child"- "My children grew so fast"- "the times we find the treasures"and "I write down everything" -- Last year I found my very own copy through Amazon- It is truly a treasure to me- I am an artist and poet,,mother of 3 and grandmother of 6 - I have loved your words and admired your philosophy for 40 years -I was researching you today and discovered your husband's obituary - I am very sorry for your loss- You are indeed a sort of heroine to me- Take care- Kaye Cloniger

Dear Rae, Ian and Gwynn,
We were saddened to learn only recently of George's passing and wish to extend our deepest condolences. George was an inspiration to those of who had the good fortune to enjoy his friendship and counsel. Your family, moreover, has always been a model for Randi and I.

George was such a kind and gentle spirit, not to mention an extremely talented and from what I am now reading, exceptional teacher. Difficult to accept the loss of such a special man, but his wonderful legacy of family and art will keep him alive in heart and spirit.

George was one of my primary design professors at CSULB. It has been many years since I sat in his lettering class but I can still recall his unique way of connecting to each student with warmth, compassion and genuine interest in whatever you might be struggling with. I remember once being a little peeved at him when he made me redo a project that I thought was nearly perfect. The revise meant a long night of work, but of course turned out even better. I learned an important lesson that day. Warm condolences to his family.

George was a colleague of my dad's at CSULB when I was growing up, and our families were friends. When I finally attended Design school at Cal State Long Beach, I always felt very fortunate to have had classes with George before he and his family moved North to CSU Chico. My thoughts are with you Rae, Ian & Gwynn.

I have two professors from Chico (1980-82) whose design influence remains with me even today. George was one of them. It was great to see him one last time at the design student's reunion a few years back.

Words cannot express how much he will be missed in Orland. His foresight and generosity have made Orland a much better town. Thanks to him we have an amazing art gallery in the midst of town, a gazebo, special lamp posts in the library park and fantastic signs welcoming people to Orland.
