LARRY JUANARENA

Hilario "Larry" John Juanarena was born in Chico on May 3, 1932 in the Sheep Camp at the M & T Ranch to Basque immigrants, Carmen and Hilario Juanarena. Larry was raised in Chico, attending Notre Dame and graduating from Chico High in 1950. Larry enlisted in the USAF, serving from 1951-1955. He was a Staff Sergeant and a crew chief for the B36 Bomber. He was stationed in California, Texas and Maine.

Larry was a long time restaurateur in Chico and his reputation for food excellence was well known. His early career included Mike and Eddie's and the Cattleman's. In 1974 Larry married Patsy Lou Dutton. They together operated the Nord Store for many years and began a successful catering business. Many wonderful lunches, BBQ parties and memories for the local farming community were created here. Ultimately, Larry and his wife, Pat opened their own restaurant the well known and loved Pat & Larry's Steakhouse.

Larry was well known for his participation and support of the Junior Livestock Auction. He created the buyer's dinner and was also involved in creating the famous buyers "Cartel".

Larry's devotion and love for the military was always foremost in Larry's life. His tireless efforts to keep patriotism alive and honor our men and women of service, past veterans and POW's will never be forgotten. Larry's love for his community and country was expressed through numerous fund raisers, charities, the avenue of flags, flood victims relief and his willingness to always step up and help those in need.

Near and dear to his heart, Larry's wall of honor acknowledged soldiers from all branches of the military. Pat and Larry provided a welcome home meal for the soldiers and their families.

Larry received many awards and recognition through the years for his cooking, charity work, community service and patriotism. Among his most memorable and cherished moments was meeting and receiving acknowledgments from General Norman Schwarzkopf, Vice President Dick Chaney, Secretary of State Colin Powell, House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Congressman Wally Herger, and Governor Arnold Swartzenager. Numerous friends referred to Larry as the "incurable Patriot".

During retirement, Larry continued to enjoy catering for family and friends, fishing in Fort Bragg, hunting and playing cards. He was a lifelong member of the Elks Lodge.

Larry is predeceased by his wife, Pat; parents, Hilario and Carmen; brothers, Tom, Cecil and Dan Juanarena; and sister, Evalina.

Larry is survived by his daughter, Candy Juanarena; son, Don Juanarena; step children, Kathy Bauer, Mike and Scott Mills and numerous nieces, nephews and grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held Friday, June 18, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, followed by a graveside service at Chico Cemetery. A reception will be held at the Elks Lodge at 1:00 p.m.

Our family has known Pat and Larry for 50 years +. My dad and Larry had a special relationship and were like brothers. I remember Larry always had a smile on his face and was a very generous man. He BBQ'd his delicious tri tip with all the fixins at my wedding. He will be missed by all.

I have known Larry for quite a few years. First he was a customer that grew into a great friendship. Larry was a great man. He did so much for this community and servicemen. We used to talk for hours about politics and what he was going to do to help the servicemen of this country. It was his passion. May God watch over his family at this time of sadness. We will surely miss Larry.

I worked for Pat and Larry in the late 80's into the early 90's and they were like my second parents. Larry and Pat both were always there to help anyone who needed it. Larry's dedication to the troops was unsurpassed by anyone. I went to school with Candy and Don, who both were the siblings I never had. My prayers and condolences are with you both and your entire family. I learned a great deal from Larry and Patty about the restaurant industry and life. Take comfort in knowing they are both in heaven supporting the troops as they come home. I will miss them both and remember them in stories I will tell my children and grandchildren about that time in my life and how Larry was so proud to be supporting the people who fight for our freedom everyday.
