Marvin C. "Curly" Hanson, age 79, of Menomonie, passed away unexpectedly, on the morning of Friday, Nov. 23, 2012.
Our dad and grandfather was born Oct. 9, 1933, to Carlton and Alice (Grambo) Hanson. He grew up in the Menomonie area, graduating from Menomonie High School in 1953. Many in the community would know and recognize him for not only his basketball talents but his many records (that still stand) in football.
Marvin met Alice Martell, and they married May 29, 1954. They lived in numerous locations, a few of which included Webster and Turtle Lake, and Forest Lake, Minn., as well as Menomonie.
After high school Marvin attended UW-River Falls for several years, transferring to and graduating from St. Cloud University with a bachelor's degree. After college he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served his tour of duty at Fort Riley Kansas and Germany.
Marvin's teaching/coaching career began in Webster, later moving his family to Turtle Lake where he taught P.E. and health, and coached football, basketball and track.
Marv and Alice adopted a son Thomas, later adding a daughter, Connie. As a family, they enjoyed camping and many other outdoor activities. Marvin also enjoyed hunting, fishing, canoeing and golfing in addition to watching many sporting events on TV, especially the "Packers".
Marv always loved to surround himself with family and friends and always had a story or two to tell of days of old.
In 2011, Marv met Lois Sipple and together they enjoyed dining, playing cards and grandkids as well as other family activities.
Marv is survived by his son, Thomas Hanson (Diane Magnuson) of Clear Lake; daughter Connie (Bryan) Carlin of Rochester, Minn.; his grandchildren, Heather, Derek and Makiah Hanson and Calvin Austvold; his significant other, Lois Sipple; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alice; and a brother Jerry.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 27, at Peace Lutheran Church in Menomonie, with Pastor David Whelan officiating. Military honors will be conducted by Menomonie Veterans Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Olson Funeral Home and at the church one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Burial will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in the Town of Menomonie in Dunn County.
