Bertrand Allen Ewer, 79, passed away on Sept. 21, 2022 in Stillwater Hospice, Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was born on July 17, 1943 in Marion to the late Jesse Bertrand and Audrey Mae (Carter) Ewer. Throughout his life Bert exhibited tenacity and strength persevering through adversity after losing his parents at a young age. His father's example of honesty and integrity was paramount to Bert's future career success.
Bert was a 1961 Marion High School graduate and continued his education at his beloved Indiana University and graduated in 1965. He worked for the IRS and later passed the CPA exam and in 1968 he joined Holiday-Shrock-Bonta Accounting Services and became partner in the early 1970's. Bert was dedicated to quality service to his clients treating them with respect while treating them like family. It was important to him to show his appreciation for their loyalty and knowing they trusted him was his defining success-"When you are honest in your work you can sleep well at night." He ended his long and successful career with Ewer & Mortiz in 2017. Bert was also a lifetime member of The International Supreme Council Order of DeMolay, J.L. McCulloch Chapter, Marion and Sigma Nu fraternity at IU.
Bert met Kay Hoffar during high school and were high school and college sweethearts. The couple recently celebrated 57 years of marriage on August 15. They raised thoughtful, honest and talented children and preached grades before athletics and set picks before scoring. Spending time with his kids cutting firewood, fishing trips to Michigan or time spent at his cabin in Warren was the quality time he cherished. He really enjoyed welcoming his kid's friends and making sure everyone felt apart of the Ewer family. Bert was a heck of an athlete himself. He excelled at tennis, bowling and playing basketball with his buddies. He especially loved dancing with Kay, his forever sweetheart.
Aside from the outdoorsman Bert was he also enjoyed classic automobiles including his wildcat convertibles and firetruck. He loved all different genres of music and played the cello and guitar. He was a Marion High School girls and boys basketball fan and he loved all IU sports. Bert really did enjoy a good time hanging out with his buddies and celebrating an IU victory and secretly rooting for a Boilermaker win too. It has been estimated that Bert drank 197,110 Bud Lights and the day after he had his last one it is predicted Anheuser-Busch stock plummeted. All laughs aside, celebrating big wins and family accomplishments was Bert's favorite pastime.
Bert deeply loved Kay who survives in their Marion home and the family they created-each one of his kids including the in-laws and especially his grandchildren. He was profoundly proud of all 10 of his grandchildren. Even until the end, talking about them brought him such joy and light in his eyes. They are the outcome of his dedication as a loving husband and father.
He is also survived by his children, Eric A. (Suzanne) Ewer, Beverly, Massachusetts; Brian D. Ewer, Marion; Melissa (Eric Caplan) Ewer, Colorado Springs, Colorado; Matthew B. (Beth Blessing) Ewer, Indianapolis; sister, Barbara Jones, Morgantown; grandchildren, Jack, Audrey, William, Ben, Connor, Carson, Alaina, Izzy, Jesse and Quinn.
He is also preceded in death by his sister, Phyllis Gibbs.
