Matthew Charles Canning (Matt) passed away Saturday, March 30, 2024 in Inverness, Florida. Matt was born October 5, 1943 on a farm in Kiltykreevaugh, Ireland to Ann (Faughnan) and John Canning.
After spending his teen years in post WWII London, Matt immigrated to the United States to his mother's sister, Ellen Faughnan, on Long Island. Matt served in the US Army as an MP and a Sergeant in Vietnam, became a United States citizen, and continued his service in the National Guard.
After retiring from United Telephone/Sprint in Inverness as a telephone engineer, Matt enjoyed spending his time with friends, traveling, and collecting antiquities and folk art. He made beautiful stained-glass panels and lamps, paintings, and upcycled found-objects into whimsical sculptures. He was a fine poet, exercising his wit and words in prose, editorial cartoons, various civic service organizations, and at breakfast with friends.
Those left to cherish his memory are his two daughters Gillian Krivit (Keith), Tallahassee, Florida, and Kelly Remsey (Jim), Columbia, South Carolina, three grandchildren, brother Michael Canning, sister Patricia Shultz, many nephews, nieces and cousins, and his loving companion Beverly Moose and her children and grandchildren. A commemoration of Matt's life will be held on Thursday, April 11, 2024 at 2:00pm, at the Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home, 3075 S. Florida Avenue, Inverness, Florida. Burial will follow at a later date, in Ireland.

My heart is broken. I lost my best friend my soul mate. You made me laugh even when I was having a bad day. We loved doing projects together. If I had an idea he would make it happen. He would buy some random object when we were out at a yard sale or thrift shopping. A masterpiece was born. He was so talented. Everywhere we went people knew him. I don´t care where we were sometimes we leave town just so nobody would know. He touched so many lives. He was loved by everyone, especially me and my children. We have so many memories will cherish forever. I love you, Matt
