Wilma Margaret Sassard MacRae passed away May 12, 2025, peacefully
at home with family and her blessed care givers.
Wilma was a lifelong Citrus County resident with family spread across the county. Her grandparents from Inverness, Mathew and Bessie (Hawkins) Clegg, and from Red Level, Ralph and Amanda (Edwards) Sassard.
Sister, as she was referred to by family, was born on July 5, 1926 to Hubert and Mildred Sassard, of Red Level. She had two brothers who preceded her in death, Nolan (2021) and Buddy (2011).
She graduated CRHS in 1943 and went to South Carolina and worked in a factory during WW11. On returning she took a job with Packer Motor Company as Bookkeeper. Wilma met Duncan MacRae and they would marry in 1947. First living in a log cabin Duncan built for them, on the Homosassa River. There they had their first two children, Jimmy and Buzz (Duncan Jr). Together they grew MacRae's of Homosassa and completed their family with three more children. As Wilma would always say, "Jimmy, Buzz, Kathy, Rodney and Gator, those are my children." She would spend the next 77 years as the matriarch of MacRae's and the "Queen of Homosassa."
Over the many years, Wilma would have the opportunity to travel Europe and the Caribbean with her sister in law Jean as chaperones for LSU. She volunteered as a Pink Lady for Citrus Memorial Hospital, and as a Charter Member of the Blanton Thomas VFW Post, a Sunday School Teacher for the Homosassa 1st Baptist Church as well as the pianist for the church for over 50 years. She was a supporter of the Key Training Center and the Florida Sheriffs Boys Ranch for many years. Her care for others would lead her to send over one hundred cards a month to many, needing a hug or well wish. Her Christmas card list was over two hundred each year. If she couldn't visit or see someone, she would to send a card to let them know she cared. Her card giving was one of her biggest ministries for Christ.
She would give birth to five children, two having preceded her in death, ames Michale (79) (Beverly 16) and Buzz (Duncan Jr.) (95). Her husband of 59 years passed in 2006. Leaving her daughter, Kathy Foulk (Frank) of FL., sons, Rodney (Marian), and Gator (Pamela), of Homosassa. She had seven grandchildren, Jamie Papizan (Ansley) TX., Shane Hansen CT., Jennifer MacRae and Jessica Evans (Chris) of Homosassa, Christopher Foulk, ME., Daniel MacRae and Rebecca MacRae of Homosassa.
Followed by the fourth generation of MacRae's, the great-grandchildren, Ruby and Laney Papizan of TX., Fae and Fiona Evans of Homosassa. She is also survived by a niece, Nancy (Sassard) Allen, nephews, Tommy and Nolan David Sassard of Crystal River, Dunc and Ronnie Massicot of Louisiana, Elizabeth Falcon, California with cousins in South Carolina and Michigan.
Services will be held in the front yard of the MacRae House on the
Homosassa River, May 28th at 10am. Please bring a chair there is limited seating available.
In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations be made to the building fund for the 1st Baptist Church of Homosassa. Strickland Funeral Home and Crematory of Crystal River is assisting the family with arrangements.
