Janet KALVEN Obituary



KALVEN

Janet Kalven, early US Grail member and pioneer in feminist spirituality, died April 24, 2014 at age 100, after a brief illness. Born May 21, 1913 in Chicago to Harry and Rose (Nathan) Kalven. Janet graduated in 1934 from the University of Chicago, B.S., Phi Beta Kappa; in 1971 from Boston University, M.Ed. Janet is survived by a niece and three nephews. In 1990 she was inducted into The Ohio Women's Hall of Fame for her lifetime of contributions to the advancement of women. In 1942 Janet joined the Grail, an international women's movement, and in 1944 she co-founded Grailville, an education and retreat center in Loveland, Ohio. Janet's legacy is the hundreds of women she empowered as a feminist educator, author and activist. The Grail invites friends to celebrate Janet's entry into new life on Sunday, June 1, 2 PM in the Grailville Oratory, 932 O'Bannonville Road, Loveland, Ohio 45140. Janet requested a Mass of Christian Burial that will be preceded by a short "Circle of Remembrance."
