John FISCHER Obituary

FISCHER

Dr. John W. Fischer passed peacefully on Saturday, August 9, 2014, age 74. He is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Janice; dear step-son, Christian (Margaret) Kulujian of Chicago, IL; mother-in-law Helen Fischer, and special friend Tiffany Taney. Dr. Fischer was predeceased by his son John Edward, and parents Jane (Peggy) and Norvin Fischer. Dr. Fischer was born on September 23, 1939. After receiving his Bachelor's Degree from Ohio Wesleyan College, he attended the Ohio State University College of Dentistry and graduated Summa Cum Laude. He completed his residency at the University of Michigan, and became a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics at the age of 35. Dr. Fischer was a prominent orthodontist in Western Hills, treating over 10,000 patients and providing pro bono services as well. During his 45 year career he was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Kentucky (1983 to 1986) and guest lectured at the Pediatric Dental Department at Children's Hospital. Dr. Fischer was a member of Mensa, the Cincinnati Dental Society, the Ohio Dental Association, the American Dental Association and the American Association of Orthodontists. He helped found the Western Hills Study Club and was a past president of the Ohio Valley Dental Seminar. Dr. Fischer was a dedicated Michigan sports fan, but more importantly he appreciated the emphasis that Michigan placed on scholastics. An avid reader and student of history, he was a champion of education. His collection of books was diverse and extensive, but History- particularly World War II- was his favorite category. He enjoyed discussing history with others- especially younger people, and would challenge them to learn and think for themselves. In addition to reading, he enjoyed playing tennis and attended the ATP matches for many years. He also expertly built intricate wooden model ships and many model cars. He enjoyed his British sports cars and vacationing on Mullett Lake in Michigan. In his later years, he really enjoyed the company of his beloved golden retriever, Clemmie. Visitation will be on Saturday, August 16, 2014, from 11:00am until the time of the Service at 1:00pm, at the Gwen Mooney Funeral Home at Spring Grove Cemetery, 4389 Spring Grove Avenue, Cincinnati, OH. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to: Xavier University, 3800 Victory Parkway, Cincinnati, OH 45249, The Alzheimer's Association, 644 Linn St. Cincinnati, OH 45203, the SPCA, 3949 Colerain Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45223 or to a charity of choice.

John and I went to Hyde Park Elementary School together. He was always a friend and I was so sorry to hear of your loss.

So sorry for your loss Jan, I pray that John is getting that long awaited visit with his son John, he has missed him for so many years. John was such a history trivia buff, just being with him increased my knowledge of WWII far beyond any text books. He loved stories about Patton, bet he will be sharing time with him too and looking down at us smiling. Johns time of suffering is over and he is in a better place, I am sure you can find comfort in memories of days when you and John first met and then built your beautiful home together and of course adding his precious Clemmie to your home. God Bless and take care, Mark, Lori and Heather Roush.

Dear Jan,
As a confidant, co-conspirator, partner, friend and someone to look up to for forty-plus years, I couldn't have asked for anyone better to fill those shoes.
There were days that we drove each other crazy, but we always stayed close and shared a lot of thoughts over the years.
I learned all the details about Churchill, U of M, jaw recession and tooth extraction and I taught him about boats, circuit breakers and septic tanks. It was a helluva good time.
I know I am the richer man to have known him and been blessed to be a small part of his life.
No words can express how much I'll miss him.
Love,
Bob

My deepest condolences over the loss of John. I cannot express how sad I am for you and the rest of your family. John was as you know a very good friend to me in particular over the years and I am saddened I haven't been visiting more. I know he has gone on to join JE and was greeted with loving arms.
