John Matre Obituary
MATRE, John H. "Jack" Beloved husband of the late Barbara (McKinley) Matre. Dear father of John (the late Molly) and David (Debbi) Matre. Loving grandfather 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Devoted brother of Dorothy (the late George) Parker. Passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 15, 2017. Age 90 years. Mr. Matre was retired after 35 years as a Music Educator with the Reading Public School District. He served honorably in the US Army during WWII. Visitation will be held at Neidhard Young Funeral Home, 7401 Hamilton Avenue, Mt. Healthy on Monday, November 20 from 5-8 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Church of the Assumption, 7711 Joseph Street, Mt. Healthy on Tuesday, November 21 at 10:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, please consider performing a random act of kindness for someone and/or making a donation to one of the following charitable organizations in Jack's memory: Children's Hospital Medical Center, St. Rita School for the Deaf, The National Parkinson's Foundation, The Salesian Missions or Church of the Assumption. I just found out Mr. Matre had passed, while I was looking him up this morning. I am very sorry to hear of his loss. He was my music teacher from 5th grade, all the way through senior year (1982) at RHS. We always enjoyed his sense of humor and the way in which he truly mentored us. In marching band, we used to call him "That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine". He always took our shenanigans in stride, but when it was time to get down to business, he had a way to get us back on track and focus.
Today, I still play the baritone horn because of his instruction and encouragement. I have very fond memories of him and consider Jack one of the most influential people in my life. I am sure that he is up there in heaven, teaching music to all of the angels!

Sorry to hear about Mr Matre. He was my music teacher all thru school. I graduated in 1970. He was a great man and teacher. I had a lot of respect for him.I would run into him,once in a while when he played in the band on New Years Eve.

As a graduate of 1968 I remember what a great band we had. It was an honor to watch them perform on the field. Mr. Matre always had a smile on his face. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.

So Sorry for your loss...I was one of Mr. Matre's students, from 5th grade,junior high thru high school ...TOO MANY wonderful memories to list. He certainly LOVED teaching young people ! Many fond memories of one of my FAVORITE teachers . What a long, life he had....

Mr. Matre was my music teacher. I'm a surgeon for work but directly because of his influence i play and enjoy music every day. He was one of the best teachers of any subject that I studied. My family prays for your family's comfort.
