Joseph Rockne ("Rock"). Died peacefully at his home on January 26, 2015. Rock was born March 11, 1932 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Joseph and Susan Morrissey. He was an altar boy at St. Mary's Church and active in the Boy Scouts, earning Eagle Scout honors. He was a 1950 graduate of Purcell High School and a member of the 1949 state championship football team recognized by the Cincinnati Enquirer as the greatest Cincinnati high school team ever. Rock graduated in 1954 from the University of \Notre Dame with a degree in civil engineering. While at Notre Dame, Rock earned a pilot's license and played football for Frank Leahy and was a member of the 1953 national championship team. After Notre Dame, Rock was an accomplished Civil Engineer and assisted with the construction of numerous complex projects, including the Mackinac Bridge in Michigan, the Tappan Zee Bridge in New York, Kettering Hospital and many others. Rock was a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to many. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Gail Lonneman Morrissey, children Michael (Sharon) Morrissey of Centerville, Ohio, James (Cathryn) Morrissey of Raleigh, North Carolina and Susan (Michael) Schmitt of Cincinnati, Ohio. Also survived by 8 grandchildren: Ryan (Heather), James, Nicholas, Samantha, Eric, Meghan, Abigail and Kevin and two great-grandchildren: Colin and Logan. Other survivors include his sister Barbara Stautberg and brother Michael (Mary Anne) Morrissey and many nieces and nephews. Rock was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Susan Morrissey, his brother John (Mary Pat) Morrissey, brother-in-law Donald Stautberg and sister-in-law Martha Morrissey. A memorial mass celebrating Rock's life will occur at 11:00 am on February 7, 2015 at St Leonard Catholic Church, 8100 Clyo Road, Centerville, OH 45458, where friends will be received from 10:00 am until time of mass. In lieu of flowers, please do something nice for your family or a total stranger - Rock will know!
