Lucille Carothers Obituary

Lucille "Twink" Carothers

Cincinnati - Lucille Klau Carothers, of Cincinnati, OH, passed away peacefully on February 9th, 2018. She was 94 years old. Twink was born in Manhattan, NY on January 25, 1924 to David and Sadie Klau. She was the beloved wife of the late Dr. Charles O. Carothers and the late Robert D. Stern, the devoted mother of Ellen Stern Kerr of Seattle, WA, John P. Stern of Berkeley, CA, and the late David R. Stern, mother-in-law of Gail Weintraub Stern and the late Yasmin Bar-Dor, dear sister of Felice Shea, Paula Oppenheim and James Klau (Susan), proud grandmother of Gabriel, Daniel and Haran Stern and Dr. Emily Kerr, stepmother of Dr. Thomas Carothers (Annette), Cole Carothers (Muffy) and Lisa Morgan (Jeff), step grandmother and step great grandmother.

Even though Twink made her life in Cincinnati, she was a true New Yorker. She attended Birch Wathen Lenox School and Connecticut College. When she was 19 years old, she met and married Bob Stern who brought her to Cincinnati. She quickly settled into the community, raising a family, establishing long-term friendships, and developing deep roots by devoting her time to volunteering and helping others. She remained in the Queen City for 75 years.

Later in life, Twink was actively involved in numerous philanthropic endeavors. She was a primary benefactor of the Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati, establishing the Lucille and Charles Carothers Theatre. She served on the Board of Trustees for the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, and was Member Emeritus of the Board of Overseers of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. She was an active member of Isaac M. Wise Temple, Losantiville Country Club, Cincinnati Country Club, Ocean Reef Club, Key Largo Anglers Club and Brandeis National Committee.

Equally important to her philanthropic commitment was her love of family and friends. With them, she traveled extensively and loved planning her annual family vacations. Twink enjoyed her winters at Ocean Reef Club, Key Largo and her summers in Wequetonsing, MI. and Rangeley, ME. For many summers, she frequented the Sun Valley Writers' Conference, ID. She excelled at sports and loved golfing, skiing and playing tennis. For decades, Twink had a weekly bridge game and completed daily crosswords. She enjoyed crafts and needle arts, entertaining, cooking and attending cultural events. Twink lived her life to the fullest and gave her heart generously and lovingly to so many. Her never-ending passion and loyalty to friends, family and community will forever be missed.

Private Family Services. A public reception will be held on Tuesday, February 13th, 4:00-6:00 P.M. at the Klau Library at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, 3101 Clifton Avenue, Cincinnati, OH 45220. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Twink's name to Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati or the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park.
