Simon Anderson Obituary

ANDERSON

Dr. Simon V., 84, of Elgin, IL, longtime professor of music at the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music, passed away last Thursday, January 14, 2016, after a long illness. Born in Rhinelander, WI, he attended the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater for his undergraduate degree and the University of Michigan for his master's and doctor's degrees. Dr. Anderson arrived at the University of Cincinnati in 1963 and quickly became one of its most-beloved professors and administrators, serving as Assistant Dean and Director of Undergraduate Studies from 1969-1971. But the classroom was where he flourished. Beginning in the music education department, he taught scores of future band directors, orchestra conductors, and classroom teachers before settling into what became his true legacy at CCM—teaching music appreciation and pop music history classes. Countless students took distance-learning classes with his Man and His Music and Pop Music, U.S.A. TV shows, both broadcast on WCET in the 70's. His traditional on-site classes were always fully subscribed, with 500 or more students in various lecture halls. Students from 1992 on used one of his two books, The Musical Imperative and Pop Music, U.S.A., both still used in colleges and universities today. He published both books with his in-house publishing company, Clifton Hills Press, Inc., which is still in existence and run by his family. At the time of his retirement in 2004, it was estimated that he had taught over 100,000 UC students in his career. When not teaching, Dr. Anderson served as music director in five local churches over the course of 40 years, along the way writing five sacred cantatas for church choir and small jazz orchestra. He also was a well-known pianist in various jazz ensembles, including his own Simon Anderson Trio with local musicians and Quartet with his children. Other activities included being host and narrator for the Opera Insights program for the Cincinnati Opera from 1995-1999, guest speaking for the Cincinnati Symphony's pre-concert Classical Conversations from 1984-1996, serving on the Boards of Trustees for the Seven Hills School and the Classical Music Hall of Fame, and adjudicating the annual American Negro Spiritual Festival for many years. A speaker who was much in demand, Dr. Anderson gave hundreds of lectures to numerous organizations, regaling audiences with his wit and charm, always desiring to help them appreciate music just a little bit more. Dr. Anderson served in the United States Army for 2 years. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nancy; sons Warren (Lea) and Elliott (Angie); daughter Karin (Dan); six grandchildren; a sister, and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2016, at 1 p.m. at the Gwen Mooney Funeral Home on the campus of Spring Grove Cemetery, 4389 Spring Grove Ave., Cincinnati, OH, 45223, with a reception immediately following. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Judson University, 1151 N. State St., Elgin, IL, 60123, or www.judsonu.edu/give, with the words "Anderson Memorial" in the memo line.

I can't believe it was 2016. I have fond memories of the music programs at Church under his direction. Mike frequently shares memories with him, when the River Boat celebrations were taking place. Riding the little motorboat to the big steamboats. We will cherish for years to come.

I teach futures teachers. Dr. Anderson and the way he held 500 students in the palm of his hand in Wilson auditorium for Music Appreciation class is a reason I became a teacher. I somehow try to bring across to my students what I learned from Dr. Anderson; It's all about the passion for the subject! He opened my ears to so many different kinds of music, all with a that big smile and twinkling eyes. Thank you, Sir, and Rest In Peace, with music.

Dr. Anderson was one of those seminal teachers for me. Even though I only took one of his classes, it was a perfect example of being given a perfect piece of knowledge delivered at exactly the right moment. To this day some of those precious things he said serve as guideposts to doing my work as a musician who serves other musicians. Very sorry to hear of his passing but the best parts of him live on in the thousands of lives he touched!

It was always amazing to watch Dr. Anderson reach every type of student with his love of music. The marketing major trying to slip in that elective would leave wanting to explore music he/she might have considered boring before Dr. Anderson's class and the conservatory student who had long since written off pop music was forced to look from a new angle and consider the possibility it might have ties to the classics. It was truly a blessing to have the opportunity to be in that room when he "did his thing".

As broadcasting majors we were convinced this would be an easy A for the quarter. Not only were we wrong, but we were challenged beyond what we thought to be the best music of our time. Thank you Dr. Anderson for taking us around the world in music.

God bless you Simon, and your family at this time. Though sad to hear of your passing, it is nice to know how fondly you are remembered here. When we performed together in the night spots, I was always mesmerized by the way you could make the jazz tunes jump, even though I thought of you as such a classical music maven. Some of my favorite memories of live performances were the times you and I would just call tunes, then dive into them. We both loved the great jazz standards, and the world sorely misses your voicing of them on that Grand in the corner. You were definitely one of the finest accompanists I ever worked with.Love and peace to your family.

Dr. Anderson was a joy in and of himself and that translated to the experience of being his student. It was a blessing to have learned from the man and the professor.

I was not a music major but I took his Music Appreciation class in 1980. To this day, I smile whenever I hear Mozart's Symphony #40 in G minor played because I can still hear some of the words he put to it to help us remember: "It's a plane, it's a train, no it's Mozart...Mozart's in the closet, let him out, let him out, let him out."
With heartfelt condolences,

Dr. Anderson was one of my favorite professors when I attended UC in the early 1970s. I have great memories of his entertaining and informative lectures in Annie Laws auditorium. He always had a smile on his face and generated such enthusiasm when teaching. He taught us how to really listen to music. Thank you, Dr. Anderson, for making learning so enjoyable. You were definitely a UC treasure!

I've known very few teachers to have such resounding passion. His words still echo in my ears, from the oscillatory nature of cultural musical taste to the evolution of new scales and musical theories. The sounds of Mussorgsky, Stravinsky, Cage, Reich, and Williams still ring true in the music that I continue to love and the stories I still regale when the topic permits. I never succeeded at getting my inept fingers to create such beautiful tunes, but oh how I can appreciate them! We will miss you, Mr. Anderson.

Bob Browning

January 21, 2016

As a young music education major at CCM in the mid 1980s Dr Anderson was one of my favorite teachers, a true inspiration. I read his book "The Musical Imperative" over and over, and use it as the basis of my own music appreciation class I teach. I, like many, was touched by his humor, genuine warmth and concern for students, and his lack of self-importance (pocket watch and three piece suit notwithstanding!). Oh, and a fabulous musician. The last time I spoke with him was at Rick Van Matre's retirement at CCM, and I don't think he remembered me. But it was good to have one final encounter with a wonderful human being who had helped me formulate my vision for what a music education could mean. I miss him already.

January 21, 2016

I never forgot his tune, "it's a plane, it's a bird, no it's Mozart." What a wonderful teacher! Music Appreciation in the late 70's.

Dr. Anderson was amazing. He's easily my favorite professor from my time at UC, and at a school of 35,000 students, that is saying a lot. I loved his classes and will never forget the smile on his face when playing music to his students. My deepest condolences.

January 21, 2016

Dr Anderson was one of only 2 (Dr Bill Randle was the other)who heard my 24 hr audio Master's thesis. I enjoyed being around him when I was working on my Masters. I also had the opportunity to guest lecture his class. He really loved his work. What a wonderful Legacy he leaves us. Just think of the hundreds of students he influenced.

The finest classroom teacher I have ever known. He inspired many thousands to make and enjoy music. As I write this I am in front of a Pop Music U.S.A class of 350, named after his text, showing a film that he copied for me years ago. I am sad beyond words to hear of this news. One of my favorite Professor's at UC. Always looked forward to his lectures. Loved his humor.

January 21, 2016

A star shines brighter over our CCM forever. The memories of classes, the memories of talking to him, but most of all about 8 years ago, I had the chance to say THANK YOU. Despite piano lessons for 12 years, Dr. Simon was able to make it fun again for me. So tonight, I will raise a glass in honor. Oh the day that the Broadcasting majors threw a wine a cheese party will always be a memory that will be passed to generations. There will never be another Dr. Anderson- EVER.

Simon's love for music was infectious. I still think of him often as I listen to Phillip Glass and Steve Reich after discovering these musicians in his class 35 years ago. I considered him a friend and I am sure many of his students felt this about him. God blessed those that were in contact with him over his years on this earth.
