David Sherck Obituary

David Sherck

Asheville - On October 20, 2016, David Lynn Sherck, age 82, rejoined his beloved wife Carol, who predeceased him in 2015. David is survived by his sister, Suzanne Zuhars (husband Dave); three children, Michael (wife Cary Bissell Sherck), Kelly (husband Andy Domnauer) and Kerry; and grandchildren, Madeline Sherck Jackson, Danielle Domnauer, Kelsey Sherck Caldwell, Drew Domnauer, and Julianne Domnauer.

David was born in 1934, the second son of the late Noble B. and Grace Sherck and raised in Columbus, Ohio, graduating from Grandview HS in 1952 and The Ohio State University (Industrial Engineering), in 1957. While attending OSU Dave was on ROTC scholarship, co-editor of the Makio yearbook, Sphinx Honorary, a member in Delta Upsilon fraternity, but most significantly, met his life-long partner, Carol Dixon. They were married June 8th, the day after graduation and his commissioning into the US Navy.

After three years in Navy flight school and several ships (last was USS Evans), Dave began his career with General Electric that would span the next three decades and take him and Carol and their growing family to Cincinnati, Syracuse, Daytona Beach, Erie, Louisville, Mexico City and Westport (CT). Positions with Black & Decker, Rubbermaid and Mallinckrodt would take Dave and Carol to Hunt Valley (MD), Wooster (OH), and Chesterfield (MO), before they settled into their chosen retirement destination of Asheville, NC (2003 - 2015). Those years were certainly some of their happiest as they founded the OSU Alumni Club of Western Carolina, continued their work on the board of Wooster's Ohio Light Opera, and attended many home football games at their beloved OSU 'shoe. Dave logged about 100 miles weekly, as weather would permit, on his bike and always 150 miles during a summer weekend, completing the Ohio MS150 with OSU buddy, the late Dr. Don Gordon.

It sounds all too trite, but we should all be so lucky (or disciplined); it was a life well lived and he was a man well loved. In truth, Michael, Kelly and Kerry lost their father in stages over the last couple of years, accelerated by their mother's passing, to the cruel progression of Alzheimer's. For those that knew Dave and want to honor that memory, a donation to the local Alzheimer's/Dementia charity of your choice would be most appropriate. The children will celebrate Dad's life together at an upcoming OSU home game, just as he would have wanted it. Go Bucks!
