Pompano Beach, FL - Don Richard Dacus, 84, passed away peacefully in North Broward Hospital in Pompano Beach, FL, Saturday, Aug. 27, 2016, after a battle with cancer. His brother Dale was at his side.

Don was born Dec. 10, 1931 to Otto and Lucille Dacus in Memphis, Tenn. The family moved to Bryson City, NC in the late 1940s and Don completed high school there.

After high school, Don graduated college at Western Carolina University in 1954 and then served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957.

After the military, Don completed graduate courses at North Carolina State University and played in the band.

Don pursued many hobbies. He loved boating and owned a pontoon boat. He was an avid golfer and won some tournaments. He enjoyed flying and owned a plane at one time. He also flew model airplanes and helicopters. He traveled extensively out west for several years in his motor home. He often wintered along the Gulf Coast.

Don accepted Jesus as his Savior July 8, 2016.

My wife, Rita were best friends with Don during high school days. We remained in casual contact via e-mail later when we were in Hendersonville and he was in Asheville. Don and I once made a 20 mile hiking trip in the Smokies. As youngsters we spent some time in pool rooms. Don became quite proficient with a pool cue. He was a special person to Rita and me.
