Dr.Harold Schutte Obituary

Dr.Harold Schutte

Dr. Harold D. Schutte, aged 87, passed peacefully at home on November 3, 2020 with his wife of 64 years at his side. He received his M.D. degree from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 1962, and interned at Mission Hospital. He practiced family medicine in Asheville for 3 years. He then entered a residency in pediatrics at the University of Tennessee and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, following which he returned to Asheville and practiced pediatrics for 40 years. Dr. Schutte was associated with MAHEC, and was Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics with UNC at Chapel Hill, and Assistant Professor of General Medicine at Duke University. He held many medical staff offices during his active practice, including Chairman of Pediatrics both at Mission and St. Joseph Hospitals. He also was a former Chief of Staff at Mission Hospital. Dr. Schutte was continually active in promoting improved quality of care for children, resulting in the co-founding of pediatric intensive care and neonatal intensive care units at Mission Hospital. After retiring from pediatrics Dr. Schutte became a state Medical Examiner assigned to Buncombe County for 10 years.

Dr. Schutte was cofounder, along with Dr. William Bryan, of Carolina Healthcare, a non- profit preventative medicine organization for 30 years.

He was an active member of the Asheville North Seventh-day Adventist Church, which he and the late Dr. William Brannon helped to establish.

He was the member of several charitable boards, including Industries for the Blind Solutions, Aston Park Health Care Center, Care Partners and other organizations. He served in the Army during the Korean War, and is survived by his wife, Margie Sabah Schutte, who was his helpmate, and his two children: his son, Dr. H. Del Schutte, Jr. of Sullivans Island, SC, his daughter, Anne Williams of Huntsville, AL, 2 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Arden Seventh-day Adventist Church on Saturday, November 14, 2020 at 2:00 pm. Contributions may be made to the Asheville North SDA Church Building Fund or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Dr Schutte and Dr MacAlpine I'd almost say 100% saved my life! I was only 2 and remained sick for several more years until both doctors called my mother in Ohio and said to bring me back to my mountains, they had made a serum they felt might make me better, and it did, it was not an easy one but I slowly became well and entered kindergarten....had a small set back and from there on I was good to go, had Dr Shutte not cared as many doctors in Ohio said "we don't know what your daughter has, please get her out of our office", he was a Saint then and he's certainly an Angel now, I cannot say enough good about this man and his partner Dr MacAlpine, I owe them a great deal of gratitude for all they did to help me thrive. It's hard to imagine Asheville not having him here.....I appreciate his family for im sure the long hours and dedication he gave obviously from all the comments here to each one of his patients and their families, im truly greatful

This was my doctor from birth to age 18 or so. He also saw my first two children as their pediatrician before he went on to teach at Duke. He was a loving doctor that would even pray over us patients. I loved him and the staff at Asheville Children's Medical . I will see you in Heaven one day! Enjoy your many treasures that the Lord had waiting for you there!!!

Dr. Harold Schutte was a close family friend. I appreciated his involvement and efforts to conduct the Health Promotion and Preventative Medicine Seminars at Hilton Head Island. My wife Barbara and I were asked by Dr. Schutte to speak at these meetings. He always made us feel very welcome and appreciated. His love and concern for others was a hallmark of his life. My father, James Ray McKinney who recently passed away, and my mother Phyllis McKinney felt a close friendship to Harold and Marge. Harold's life will be not be forgotten and we all look forward to that great day when Jesus comes again. Our thoughts and prayers are with Marge, Del, and the rest of the family.

You were blessed if you knew this great man, Dr. Schutte. I worked with Dr. Schutte on Mission Mother-Baby Unit for many years. His smile would enter the room before he did, he always greeted you by your name, his voice was always upbeat and I loved to hear that chuckle of a laugh! He was full of knowledge and loved to share it! Dr. Schutte was my husbands' family pediatrician up until we got married at the age of 23! We were blessed to have Dr. & Mrs. Schutte attend our wedding and were honored that they took time out to come and support us! Praying for this precious family; Margie, Anne and Del. He meant so much to so many people! Through the years, we are better human beings to have known this wonderful man and his sweet family!! You finished your race well, Dr. Schutte!

A life well lived. Dr.Schutte was a wonderful mentor as I started out as a new Pediatrician. When he spoke to you, as a colleague, patient, friend, or anyone else, you were the most important person on earth. He took as much time as needed. After 30 years in Asheville, I continue to hear the stories of everyone who was touched by Harold Schutte. Condolences to his always amazingly kind wife Margie and their family. We are all better because of Dr.Schutte.

Even today, 35+ years after being a pediatric patient, I can visualize Dr. Shutte entering the room, making eye contact with me, and caring for me with utter compassion. All these years later, I deal with my children's pediatricians and can say without hesitation that Dr. Shutte's kindness and professionalism is unparalleled.

Was pediatrician for my children from 1973 until he left pediatrics. The last time I had the pleasure of seeing him was at the Badge Office when he became the Medical Examiner at Mission Hospital. We had a special prayer before he left the office. Such a special person and will be very much so missed. He had such a caring smile and demeanor. RIP Dr. Schutte.

I had the opportunity to be Dr Schutte’s Practice Manager at Asheville Children’s Medical Center from 1976 until his retirement. He was always such a kind man to all he came in contact with. His patient families adored him. I so much appreciated the fact that he trusted me totally. Proud to be an alumnus of that practice. Margie, Anne, and Del prayers for comfort are ascending for you.

Bob's father, Dr. Orville MacAlpine, an Asheville pediatrician, first met Dr. Harold Schutte in the early 1960's when Harold interned at Mission Hospital. Dr. MacAlpine encouraged Dr. Schutte to consider pursuing the specialty of pediatrics, which he did. After the Schuttes returned to Asheville, the MacAlpines and Schuttes enjoyed a close friendship for many years. We will always remember his big smile and outstretched arms which always greeted us. He was friendly and gracious during our many conversations with him, and we will miss him. Bob and Gail MacAlpine

This man is the greatest physician I have ever had the privilege to know. He inspired me to go into medicine to be like him. He was so gentle & knew when I was scared of a procedure he would answer my million questions as to why it was necessary. He took the time to explain every one of my questions. I wanted him to be my physician for life. Everything was going to be ok as long as he was there. I have hoped I would find another like him & I have not yet. He IS such a wonderful doctor, kind man & genius of his craft. This man has helped me through some of the most frightening times as a child & the world has truly lost a rare gift from God. We will see him again & thank you so much for taking care of my cousins, my friends & myself. We all love you.

Just a wonderful man. I got to know Dr. Schutte through two different avenues. His brother, Thom was my teacher at AHS his first year teaching, and I later worked a few death scenes with Dr. Schutte while he was the Medical Examiner. Just a great guy who was very humble and caring about everyone he met. Dr. Schutte will be missed by all who knew him and sadly those who never had an opportunity to meet him!

I’m so sorry to hear of Dr, Schutte’s passing. I got to work closely with him when he took on the role of medical examiner. He never had a bad word to say, and we would talk about our families, which he loved dearly. I met his wife briefly when she would make a visit to see him. He will be missed. Prayers to Mrs. Schutte and the rest of the family for strength and peace in the coming days.

Dr Schutte was such a beautiful influence in my life. I knew him through my parents Tom (Allison’s pharmacy pharmacist/owner) and Irma Allison( nurse/NP). As I grew up in Asheville, They sang his praises and I was blessed to have him as a mentor through study in his practice in PA school. I have taken his enthusiasm and knowledge throughout my life and career. We kept in touch over the years, although not as often as wished. The world has lost a great man and he will be missed. I shed tears as I send my sympathy for your loss. His smile and joy will be missed.

Dr. Shutte was my children’s Pediatrician. He was such a wonderful man. I have so many sweet memories of times we chatted. He laughed with me and cried with me. We spoke of God many times together. I still have the sweet letter he wrote me when he retired. He told me things 25 years ago that have only been revealed lately in medical studies. His wisdom surpassed any doctor I have known. This world will miss him and my family shared that burden. My condolences to his family. He was truly a special person with a heart to serve and help others. His life was indeed a wonderful testimony of kindness and love.

What a fine man Dr. Schutte was! He saved our newborn son's life in 1973 after studying a new technique to use to treat infants born with Hyaline Membrane Disease. I believe he told us that our son, Vincent McMahan, was the first infant whose life he had saved with the technique. I cannot express what we owe to Dr. Schutte and God for giving us our only child, now 47 years old! We were truly given a miracle! Our condolences to the family of this great man!
