Edward Haynes Obituary

Edward Haynes

Asheville - Edward Haynes, age 86, of Asheville, died on Sunday, January 18, 2021 at the Western North Carolina Baptist Home. He was born on October 6, 1934 and was the son of the late John and Florence Haynes.

Edward was a devoted family man with a very caring soul who worked hard his entire life to selflessly provide for his family. Besides being a loving and devoted father to his three sons, he was also a father figure to many others. Friends and strangers alike enjoyed his company, and he will be missed by many.

Edward was a proud native of Western North Carolina. Born in Polk County, he lived most of his life in the Asheville area and never really wanted to live anywhere else. He was a big lover of music and sports; he never missed a Tarheels basketball game, and old Western movies. He loved to laugh and especially loved making other people laugh. He also enjoyed telling stories, mostly about memories of his childhood and humble rural upbringing or his children's adventures and proudest accomplishments.

Although Edward was content to just spend time with friends and family, he also enjoyed the occasional adventure himself. Even in his later years he would travel many times to New Orleans, where he once lived and worked as a Merchant Marine. He attended the N.O. Jazz Fest and enjoyed the food and culture.

Anyone who had the good fortune of meeting Edward was moved by his gentle, kind spirit and generosity as well as his down to earth nature. He had a way of making everyone around him feel comfortable and never looked down upon or placed himself above anyone.

Edward is preceded in death by his two loving sisters, Pauline and Francis. He leaves behind his three sons, Timothy, Brian and Warren, his three daughters-in-law, Jan, Susan and Stefani, four grandchildren, Austin, Dylan, Ben and Hudson and his two great-grandchildren, Lawson and Waylon.

In lieu of flowers please send donations to Beloved Asheville. Donations can be made on their website at belovedasheville.com. Or to, Nina Simone Childhood Home in Polk County, https://savingplaces.org/places/ninasimone.

The family will have a private Celebration of Life service at a later date. Morris Funeral & Cremation Care is serving the family and condolences may be sent to them through our website at www.morrisfamilycare.com.

Edward and my grandfather were first cousins. Occasionally throughout my life I got to listen to him talk about rural Polk county life. I Believe he was the last of the greatest Haynes generation. I hope we can all live life like they taught us too. Respectful, kind, and generous.

I met Mr. Haynes at the Roses in Weaverville, several years ago. He was out Christmas shopping for toys with his son. When he asked the cashier where he could find a Transformer toy, I had my son go with him to the toy dept to find one. He was so nice, so appreciative of that. A good down to earth guy, a trait that runs deep in the family. RIP, sir.
