Florence DePaolo Obituary

Florence Barbara DePaolo

Asheville - Florence Barbara DePaolo, 93 of Asheville, died Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at Emerald Ridge Rehabilitation Center in Weaverville, NC. Born December 6, 1923 in Camden, New Jersey, she was the daughter of John Neville and Elizabeth Cook.

She received her degree in nursing from Misericordia School of Nursing in Philadelphia, PA. As a devoted Registered Nurse all of her life, she was the nurse that other nurses emulated.

She was a veteran of World War II and served active duty from 1945-1946, having spent time in the Pacific Theatre, Hawaii, Midway and Japan. She retired from the military with a rank of 2nd lieutenant.

After living in West Palm Beach most of her life, her children in North Carolina persuaded her to move to the Carolinas. We were fortunate enough to have her present with us for over 20 years.

She was a devout Catholic and attended St. Eugene's Catholic Church. She practiced her religion each and every day and never spoke an unkind word.

Her secret passion was ballroom dancing. She mastered the Cha Cha, the Rumba and received national awards in many competitions. She also enjoyed volunteering in Orthopedics at St. Joseph Hospital and Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC.

Florence dedicated her life to her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her daughter, Dr. & Mrs. Gary "Liz" Smith of Chapel Hill, NC and son, Dr. Charles J. DePaolo and "Sally" of Asheville, NC. She loved and adored her six grandchildren; Nicole, Brandon, Kendall, Jack, Sarah & Stuart, and her seven great-grandchildren.

Her memorial service will be on Friday, December 30, 2016 at 3:00 PM at St. Eugene's Catholic Church. The family would like to thank the caring staff at Emerald Ridge Rehabilitation Center and Memory Care for their love and support throughout the years. We are also forever grateful for the care of Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Eugene's Catholic Church.

Dear Chuck and family,
...the beauty of your mother's life is the opportunity you have experienced to care for her during her extended life just as she cared for you and so many others over the many years.

Her journey must be awesome as she joins the communion of Saints, especially at this special time of the year.

As always we send love and caring to you our extended family.
Love,
Irene, Constance and Ken

To Chuck and the rest of the DePaolo family, please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers in this time of sadness for your family. I do know your pain as my own mom passed away in December at her favorite time of year. May the God of Glory, Hope and Peace surround you with his loving arms and hold you close.
