Frederick Benonis Obituary

Frederick J. Benonis

Marshalls Creek, PA - Fred, who was also known as "Bim," died very peacefully at the Elizabeth House, a hospice facility in Flat Rock, NC on the morning of Thursday, April 21, 2017. He was born in Pottsville, PA on May 16, 1930, the son of George and Lenore Liebner Benonis. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Anne Marie, and his brother, Rev. William.

Fred attended St. Patrick's grade school and graduated in 1948 from Pottsville Catholic High School where he played both football and basketball. He was drafted into the United States Army and served in Germany during the Cold War. He then attended LaSalle College and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1958. Fred lived for several years in Bethlehem, PA before settling in his beloved Poconos of Pennsylvania.

He had a great passion for nature and showed it in his appreciation of hunting and fishing. Fred drove to North Carolina to visit his brother, Rev. Richard, to enjoy some spring fishing. Two days after he arrived he complained of chest pressure and upset stomach. He was admitted to the Veterans Affairs Hospital with the diagnoses of bone marrow cancer, kidney failure, and congestive heart condition. After a short hospital stay, he was transferred to hospice.

Fred is survived by two brothers, George, his elder brother, and Rev. Richard, his younger brother, and by several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in the family plot in Pottsville, PA.

Condolences to his family and loved ones.
65 years ago Frederick found the body of a little boy discarded in a box. It wasn't until this year (2022) that that little boy was finally identified. It's sad that he passed five years before learning the identity of the little boy he found in 1957.
I'm sure that stayed with him all his life.

I remember all of our long heart to heart talks about life and where our individual paths might be heading. I miss you every day my dear friend and it is nice to remember you here.

Oh I am so sorry to learn of this loss. I worked for Fred when he had his insurance agency in Bethlehem PA. As our lives took separate paths we remained friends through the years and talked on occasion to say hello and get caught up. I always loved to hear his laughter, and stories of his hunting and fishing trips. I last spoke to him back in late 2015 or early 2016.. I did not know of his passing until now. I was cleaning out old stuff and came across a card from him.I tried to call the numbers I had for him but couldn't connect. I searched google and came across his obituary. My condolences to the family, he always talked about George and Rev Richard. Even though time has passed my heart hurts today to learn of his passing. He was a good man with a clean sincere heart. God has him in his house now. God loves you Fred. I am missing you.

Bimbi was a beloved cousin of my Father. I remember as a child when he would show up at the Family Picnics my Dad(Jim Liebner) would always be so happy to see him. Some years after my Dad's death some of us Liebner's would occasionally go to the Hut to visit. Bimbi was such a joy to be around. He was a great story teller and we enjoyed learning about our families the Benonis's and Liebner's in Pottsville. He will be greatly missed.
