Jan Elizabeth

Morgan

Hendersonville - Jan Elizabeth Morgan, 55, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, January 6, 2012. She was a proud native of Hendersonville. She was a daughter to the late Malvern and Mary Morgan. She graduated from Hendersonville High School in 1974 and Southeastern Bible College in 1978. She worked as a police officer in Hendersonville for four years and then returned to school, obtaining her bachelor's and master's degrees in mathematics from UNCA and Western Carolina University. She taught math at Erwin High School for 24 years and was known as a tough, caring teacher. Jan lived to the fullest, especially enjoying her friends and family, the beach, mountain biking, music, and her shih tzu Lucy, who went to school with her several days a week. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Hendersonville and was active in the music and youth ministries. Jan will be remembered for her quick wit, strong faith, and caring heart. She went on several mission trips and developed a passion for the people of Uganda after spending time at an orphanage there. Jan had many friends and neighbors who were a support and source of encouragement over the past few years.

Jan is survived by two sisters: Linda Dollar and husband Alan of Oxford, FL and Diane Smith and husband David of Horse Shoe, NC. Five nieces and nephews: Amy Jacobs and her children, Kelly Simpson and husband Ben and their children, Derek and his wife Erin and their children, Adam Smith, and Holly Smith.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday January 8th, 2012 at 2:00pm at First Baptist Church of Hendersonville with the Rev. Ryan Pack officiating. Interment will follow in Pace Cemetery in the Green River Community. The family will receive friends on Saturday evening January 7th, 2012 from 6-8:00pm at Thos. Shepherd and Son's Church Street Chapel. In lieu of flowers, if you would like to join Jan's passion, please consider a donation to Grace for Education, a nonprofit involved in building a facility to disciple college students in Uganda. Jan Morgan was one of the most influential people of my life. She is a majority of the reason I am becoming a math teacher myself. I hope that I can be even a fraction of the teacher she was and we should all aspire to be as good a person as her.

She will be missed beyond measure.

Ms. Morgan was for sure one of the best teachers. She made math fun & easy to learn. She always had a way to keep our attention, with her funny stories and her gift of teaching. May GOD bless her family.

Ms. Morgan was a wonderful person and left an amazing legacy by touching so many lives. She battled cancer the first time when I was in her class. I will always remember her strength and courage. I wasn't even a "fan" of math, yet she remains one of my favorite teachers.

Ms. Morgan was a wonderful teacher and mentor, I went to her class many mornings before school started to get her help, even though I failed geometry she tried to hammer it in. She saw when I was going through tough family times and was always there for me to talk to. She was a great person and will be greatly missed by all of her former students.

Linda and Diane,
I haven't seen you all in many years. I remember spending time at both Bancroft Bible Camp and Hendersonville with you and your family. I have kept up with you all through Alice Ann over the years. I am so sorry for your loss of Jan. She is thankfully not suffering and is able to see family and friends who are able to share her glorious home coming. May God give you comfort during this time. I will be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers through this time.
Sincerely,
Bethany Tilley (Kingsport, Tn)

Ms. Morgan was truly an inspiration and positive influence in my life. As an artist, Math was never my strong suit. Still, I remember one eureka! moment in Ms. Morgan's Geometry class when the formulas and concepts clicked. She was a gifted teacher, and an exceptionally caring person. She will be missed.

Jan Morgan was, by far, the greatest teacher I've ever had. The passion she showed when teaching was outstanding. She made sure we knew what we were doing to the point where almost our whole class aced the AP exam. She also made clear her faith, even during class. She was a great teacher and a huge inspiration. She will be missed dearly

I graduated Erwin almost 20 years ago and have always remembered Ms Morgan! I was even thrilled that my own teenage daughter had her as a teacher. I'm so glad that I was able to be in her class and see what an amazing woman that she was.
She will be missed by so many people that love her.
My sympathy for her family and friends because I know this is such a difficult time.
With love,
The Lee Family

Jan Morgan, was a great woman, even though I never had the privilege to be in her class. She was always walking through the math hallway keeping her spirits up no matter what she was going through. She had such a great impact on her students and co-workers, and will be missed. Praying for the family in their time of loss.
