Jean Becker Obituary

Jean T. Becker

Asheville - Betty "Jean" T. Becker was born in Walnut, N.C. July 30th, 1934 to Lawton (Tommy) and Nettie (Chick) Thomas who preceded her in death. She lived most of her life in Asheville and Brevard. She graduated from Brevard High School in 1952.

Jean met the love of her life, George F. Becker of Gainesville, Florida, at a town street square dance in Brevard the summer of 1951 and their romance continued for over 60 years. George passed away May 6th, 2014. They would have celebrated their 63rd anniversary in Sept. of 2015.

Jean was a homemaker and lovingly raised 3 children in Asheville. She is survived in death by William Raymond (Bill) Becker and daughter-in-law Charlotte Byers Becker of Hickory, NC and granddaughter, Julie Becker Barnes, and husband Trent of Cornelius, NC; Robert George (Bobby) Becker and daughter-in-law Vicki Becker of Ocean Isle Beach, NC and granddaughters Samantha (Sam) Becker and Jessica Becker of Asheville, NC; Mary Gail Becker Broome and son-in-law Robert Broome of Harrisburg, NC and granddaughters Dr. Laura Broome of Branford, CT and Allison Broome of Harrisburg, NC as well as brothers Buck

Thomas and Charles Thomas, sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jean was and is loved and cherished by many. She had a warm bubbly sparkling personality making friends wherever she went. She was an active member of Malvern Hills Church for over 60 years where she was involved with the women's circle groups, bible study, nursery, Sunday school classes, the women's presbytery and more. She also worked at Calvary and First Presbyterian Church daycares.

Some of Jean's many friends included ladies from the YWCA wives clubs that in later years were renamed the "Wild Wives Club." Her best friend of over 60 years, Shirley Guice, will miss her as well. Jean was also the biggest cheerleader and mom of the University of Florida Blue Ridge Gator Club. She loved to visit with friends, read, sing, dance, listen to music, sew, and cook.

Many of the best memories her children have of her were when they came in from playing in the snow, their mama always had hot chocolate and toll house chocolate chip cookies for them. Summertime always brought strawberry and cherry pies and blueberry salad from George's fruit garden and Jean's chocolate chip pound cake, fudge, and egg salad recipes have been shared by many.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM, Tuesday, June 9, 2015, at Malvern Hills Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Thomas M. Cox officiating. Burial will be immediately following at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends on Monday from 7:00 till 9:00 PM at Anders-Rice Funeral Home.

The family would like to express a special "Thank You" to the Malvern Hills Presbyterian Church and the Blue Ridge Gator Club for all your prayers and support during this time.

In lieu of flowers memorial may be made to Malvern Hills Presbyterian Church, 2 Bear Creek Road, Asheville, NC 28806.
