Eugene "Gene" Mazur, 80, of Wilkes-Barre, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2022, after a brave, three-and-a-half year-long battle with liver cancer.
A true Renaissance man, Gene was a creative, a builder, a risk-taker, adventurer and conversationalist. He was a loving and generous son, brother, uncle and friend who lived a long life full of adventure, love and most of all, laughter.
Gene was born Nov. 23, 1941, to John and Sabina Przekop Mazur. He joined his big brother, Raymond. Eugene was a 1959 graduate of Kingston High School and served in the U.S. Army. After he returned home, he became a hairdresser and owned a beauty shop in Wilkes-Barre until a flood in June of 1972 destroyed it. As a result, he and his friend, Les, relocated to the Miami, Fla., area where he opened up another salon that thrived. Gene always loved Florida - the water, snorkeling, eating seafood and painting the landscape. He raised Gold finch birds in an aviary in his home. He taught ballroom dance at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio. Boy, was he smooth! Another hurricane in 1992 destroyed his Key Largo, Fla. home. Gene was a survivor and rebuilt that home. When he retired from hairdressing, he returned home to Wilkes-Barre to lovingly care for his mom. He loved to garden, cook, renovate his house and play the horses.
Gene will join his parents, the late John and Sabina Przekop Mazur; and brother, Raymond Mazur.
Gene is survived by his sister-in-law, Angela Rocchio Mazur; nephew, Nathan (Julie) Mazur and their children, Melanie, Nicholas and Dominic; niece, Nicole (Joe) Sauer and their children, Alexis, Michael and Raymond; and niece, Salene Kraemer and her three children, Jackson, Keira and Scarlett; in addition to his best friend and cousin, Sandra Del Balso and her husband, Joe, their children and grandchildren; and other relatives.
Throughout all of the adventures and challenges in his life, Gene always had a great attitude and an amazing sense of humor. You would never guess he was 80. He will be missed.
The family will receive friends from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at AJ Kopicki Funeral Home, 263 Zerbey Ave., Kingston. Mass will be held at 10:15 a.m. in St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church, 339 N Maple Ave., Kingston.
