Gary Harlon Scavone, 67, of Kingston, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2021, in the presence of his loving family and friends following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born July 20, 1954, in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late Phillip and Joan McHenry Scavone.
Gary attended Hoyt Elementary School and was a 1972 graduate of E.L. Meyers High School. He earned All-Scholastic and MVP honors in football and baseball as a gifted three-sport athlete. Gary held significant records as a Mohawk quarterback for decades, and his talent as a pitcher led to his selection by the Atlanta Braves fresh out of high school. He later continued his education at Luzerne County Community College and Wilkes University. Gary was inducted into the Meyers High School Sports Hall of Fame and Luzerne County Sports Hall of Fame.
Gary was employed by Dayco Automotive for 29 years, reaching the regional manager level.
Gary loved fishing and hunting and was an enthusiastic golfer and former member of Berwick Country Club. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 395, Kingston.
A nephew, Austin Vosburg, preceded him in death.
His brother, Phillip and his wife, Christine Scavone, Edwardsville; sisters, Pamela and her husband, Peter Monka, Wilkes-Barre; Joann and her husband, Albert Vosburg, Tunkhannock; and Megan and her husband, John Nargoski, Wilkes-Barre; nieces, nephews, other family and friends, including his best friend and brother in life, Jeff Pace, Dallas, will miss him very much.

Omg, I just heard of Gary's passing. So sad. I met Gary in grade school and we played little league baseball together. His father, Phil, was our coach. Such a great athlete. He led our team to the league championship and our league (along with another great athlete, Tony Schwab) to the district championship. I'll never forget when he, and a few other guys, took over the band at my wedding. Classic! Living out of the area I had not seen Gary in many years until we met a few years ago at another friend's funeral and he told me of his cancer diagnosis. Just tragic. Rest in Peace Gary. Your great sense of humor still brings a smile to my face.

I was five years older than Gary. My friends and I used to let Gary play baseball with us in Miner Park. Surprise surprise, he pitched for us! Several years later I found out that Gary and my brother Jeff had become best friends. Eventually, Gary became one of my closest and dearest friends as well. I drove him to Philadelphia for tests on his shoulder after Jeff had arranged for him to see a top orthopedic surgeon, and during the ride I prepped him for an upcoming test on Chaucer, for which he was woefully unprepared. He reminded me many times over the years that he got an "A" on that exam because of that trip. Gary was always ready to give other people credit for helping him. We laughed together, and we and cried together. We hunted and fished together. We spent many, many evenings at Vispi's, and playing pool and shooting darts at both my parents' and Jeff and Joyce's houses. Gary's love will always remain in my heart. I extend my deepest sympathy to Phil, Pam, Joann, Megan, and my loving brother Jeff for your immeasurable loss.
