Jerry McDonald Obituary

On Thursday, May 10, 2018, Dr. Jerry McDonald lost the battle for his life against cancer.

He was the son of the late James R. and Betty Perry McDonald. He was a graduate of Dallas High School, Class of 1971. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in biology from King's College and his doctorate in veterinary medicine from De La Salle Araneta University.

He was an accomplished and well respected, no-nonsense old-school veterinarian for 35 years. He was the owner and founder of All About Animals Veterinary Services in Luzerne, where he enjoyed the privilege of working side-by-side with his family.

Jerry's community service credits were extensive, and were mainly focused on the involvement of his daughters. These included coaching softball and soccer, being the club director of Wyoming Valley Soccer Club, EPYSA ambassador, on the board of the Back Mountain Youth Soccer Association and league commissioner of Bob Horlacher Little League. He was also a long standing member of the AVMA, PVMA and the NEPVMA.

He enjoyed estate saling, and was an avid collector of vintage cookie jars along with a wide range of antiques. Jerry also enjoyed working on the family farm and spending time with his family and pets, especially his dog, Parker.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 42 years, the former Diane Saunders; daughters, Heather McDonald, Wyoming, Pa.; Megan McDonald and her husband, Carlos Crocker, Dallas; and Colleen McDonald, Wyoming, Pa.; and brother, Patrick McDonald, Clifton, N.J.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday from Metcalfe-Shaver-Kopcza Funeral Home Inc., 504 Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, with the Rev. Robb Henderson officiating.

Interment will be in Mount Zion Cemetery, Exeter Twp.

Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the SPCA of Luzerne County, 524 E. Main St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702, to aid Jerry's lifelong ambitions of advancing animal welfare.

Deeply saddened to learn of Jerry's passing. We grew up together. Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Dallas School Band.
He was a great trumpet player. A great football player. Lost communications as often happens. Regret that. No surprise that Jerry touched so many lives. He was a great guy. Home with Jesus. God Bless his family and friends.

Dear Diane and daughters, I am so so sorry for your loss. I am Jerry's cousin, daughter of Bill and Louise LaVergne. I just received my DNA results from Ancestry only to have Jerry come up as my closest relative. My mother had recently told me I should make contact with him because he and his family are such nice people. I did send a message through Ancestry and now know why I did not hear back. I am so sorry for your loss and that I never met him. I was looking for Uncle Jim's obit when his came up. My sincere condolences to you all.

My husband Tom and I wanted to send our sincerest condolences on the passing of Jerry. We met him over 30 years ago when he was recommended to us as a great vet for greyhounds. He was that and a lot more. We came to consider him our vet and our friend. With his gentle yet professional way of treating our hounds he inspired a great deal of respect and trust in his judgment. He never let us down. Two things we found in knowing him. How proud he was of his girls and how much he loved his family. Rest in peace Jerry.

I just wanted to say Jer was a great man. The little bit that I work for him and the way he cared for all the animals was wonderful. I will never forget him. To his girls, wife, and all his family I pray for Peace and the loving arm of God to hold you through this terrible time. With all my love and blessings.

To the McDonald Family:

I extend my deepest sympathies to you & your families. In our darkest hours we find our most Noble selves, and we can be so Noble, as Jerry had shown us. From his first diagnosis to his last breath he showed us what true courage & grit looked like. He set out to beat this unholy disease so he could one day work with his family doing what he loved the most - the well-being of all animals. I had the honor of having Dr. J. as my vet after 2011. From his office on Bodle Rd. to the opening of All About Animals I watched him with great admiration, knowing he was fighting an unseen enemy while caring for my cats. To him it was all in a day's work, but to me I was a witness to the boundaries of human resilience. When asked how his family was doing, he would light up with well-earned pride & say they doing well. He was proud of his family & profession, and rightfully so. It takes a special kind of person to help & care for those souls who cannot speak for themselves. Take comfort in knowing he's in the Arms of the Angels, where he can watch over all as a father does, smiling from Heaven knowing he may have lost his battle, but what he leaves behind can never be taken away. Thank you Jerry, for the privilage of calling you Dr. & friend to my "fur babies"

"There are Angels that walk among us,
Who they are we do not know
We only find out who they were,
the day God called them Home"
