Dave was my first "teacher" in college. He seemed to believe in me when I didn't believe in myself. I remember, he once found me by telephone to remind me that I was missing an important exam. I, of course, was asleep on someone's couch. He was a kind man, committed and full of a gentle humor. His impact, on me, has helped to shape my life and my art. He helped me to love language and all he asked in return was that I pursue my dreams with vigor and honesty.

Dear Ruth, Kelly, Claudia, Polly, Jim and Families,
Sharon and I will be represented at the service this evening, but not remotely in the way we would have chosen. You are all in our thoughts.

Sue: I took an ethnic literature class from your father-in-law the summer of 1990. He was a wonderful teacher who gave us challenging pieces and led vibrant discussions.
My condolences to you and all of your family.

I had the privilege of being in a couple of Dave Nicklin's classes at UNO in the mid-70's. He was one of my all-time favorite professors. He was kind, empathetic, warm, and personable. My sympathies go out to all his family, and I will keep all of you in my prayers. He was a wonderful man.

I did not know David Nicklin, but I did know his wonderful parents. They pastored my Methodist Church in Oskaloosa in the mid 1950's. I was inspired by their personal courage in the battle for Civil Rights. I remember the day when Mrs. Nicklin (also a pastor) stood at the door of a bus while we boarded: our two African American members had been denied entry into the swimming pool in Lawrence, Kansas. Without discussion, the Nicklins shepherded us back to Oskaloosa. What a wonderful legacy.

I feel like I should have gotten to know him a lot better then I had the chance to do so. I was just looking through an album of family pictures the other day that my father, David's first cousin, had collected and saw a picture of him with his parents and the smile is the same, almost as if the smile were a prediction of the man that was to follow!
Love to all of the family!

Dear Nicklin family,
I had the honor of taking an English class with Prof. Nicklin at UNO back in the late 80's. I learned so much from him and enjoyed being in his class. He was a great man!
So very sorry for your loss.
Sincerely,

I saw Dave in the play "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" -he played Harding, a willowy fellow with long slender fingers and caustic wit, but wholly introverted with a disdain for life among the public. What a marvelous actor to play his opposite so well.
Jim, Kelly, Ruth & Family, please know that Dave was appreciated by many, and will be missed by all that knew him. Accept my heartfelt sympathy.

Dave was the epitome of a gentle-man. He had rare aesthetic sensibilities and such a sweet and welcoming presence. Ruth, I am so sorry about your terrible loss. As you know, I thought the world of both of you when I lived in Omaha and attended the Unitarian Church. I am sorry we lost contact over the years, but I remember you both with tremendous fondness and send deepest condolences from both Joe and me.

Ruth, I am so sorry for the loss of your wonderful husband. Although I have only known you and Dave for a few years, it seems that in every interaction I have had with either of you I learned more about your truly amazing grace. I am so lucky to be among the many at First Unitarian who will long bask in the afterglow of Dave's life. May you and your family have peace and comfort in your memories in the years to come

Ruth and Family, I am so sorry to hear of Dave's leaving us. He was a very gifted, and truly wonderful man. He had such a great smile and his eyes would just twinkle - I always remember the mischievous grin that would appear when he told the reason you and he liked to stay at The Cromwell when in New York. My thoughts with you always.

Ruth & Family:
Dave's passing is a great loss to all of us.
Since 2002, Dave treated my emailed newspaper column as a personal correspondence and emailed me back on nearly every one with comments or his own similar stories. I cherish the friendship that we built.
Sometimes, he referred to you all (his children and grandchildren) as though I knew you well. And indeed, through him, I did.
My thoughts are with you this week.
