Ernest was the music which the soul calls "love". Ernest radiated in his affection for others and his affection for music. Ernie was, and will always be a continuing light! His smile was the candle which lit my day.

Many fond memories of You playing the piano at my parents home on 62nd street in Topeka (Duke & Priebe Peyton). "Jeremiah Was A Bullfrog" on our piano was a classic for me! Every time I hear that song, I think of you pounding those keys and singing. Thank you, Ernie, for the great memories, as well as your kind friendship to my parents. Rest in Peace, Ernie.

Ernie...Topeka's gift to America. I talked to him a few years ago about sharing his talent in California's Bohemian Grove. We couldn't make it happen. I think of him often and miss the fun on the west entrance in our junior year. Wait for me Ernie.

I'll always be thankful to Ernie for providing a great venue for local jazz musicians with Catfish Hollow on 6th St. Plus it had really great fried catfish. Thanks Ernie.

I had the extraordinary pleasure of meeting Mr. Ernie Douglas on Jan. 29 when he and his trio played, what must have been his last gig, at my book reading at Westminster Presbyterian. He mesmorized the audience both with his playing and his timely and wise comments on things I read from my book about a lynching. I spoke with him by phone soon after that and he shared his wisdom and good humor with no indication of the suffering he was surely going through. I wish I'd had more time with this lovely man. Rest in peace, magnificent musician.

I last saw Ernie at a funeral service in the Bowser Funeral Home in Topeka, just a few years ago. We joyfully embraced each other and thanked God for giving us the privilege of knowing each other. We were THS grads in the class of 1951. I admired his grit and talent! It was a privilege to know Ernie!! Blessings on his family! Theodore T. JOnes, II SDA retired minister.

I have many happy memories of hearing and watching Ernie play the piano and marimba on the Plaza on the rooftop at a well known hotel! He was always in talent shows in high school and I can say that everyone knew him without a doubt! I know that your family will miss him so much. I remember when he brought your mother who was 100 (or even more) to one of our reunions! I know that I'll see him again!
Sincerely,

I have known Ernie my whole life. I knew the whole family, because I lived at the corner of 17th & Quincy. Ernie and I walked to Crane Jr. High together, with Peno. I used to listen to him playing the piano on summer evenings, before air conditioning, and people left their windows open. I will miss his friendship greatly.
