Eugene Eckhardt Obituary

Eugene L. Eckhardt, son of Ernest and Clara Eckhardt, was born in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, on 5/21/1925. He died on Easter Sunday April 12, 2009, at Illini Heritage Nursing Home in Champaign Illinois. Eugene "Gene" married Arlette "Letty" W. Schurman on 7/23/1950. She survives in Champaign, IL. God blessed their marriage of 58 years with 8 children: Judy (Johnnie) Petering of Aldgate South Australia; Jeanette Eckhardt, Urbana IL; JoAnne Carmichael, Champaign IL; Martin Eckhardt, Topeka, KS; Tim (Jeri) Eckhardt, Wakarusa KS; Frances (Bill) Forgione, Denver CO; Jon Eckhardt, Springfield, MO; Paul (Gilda) Eckhardt, Gresham, Oregon. Gene and Letty have 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Eugene's parents preceded him in death as did his brother LeRoy; LeRoy's wife Letitia survives in Belleville IL. Other surviving siblings include sisters Vera (Lou) Heider in Omaha NE; sister Eunice (Thomas) Carmichael of Champaign IL and Dorothy (Woody) Woodbury of McLean, VA. Pastor Eugene Eckhardt graduated in 1950 from Concordia Seminary in St Louis Missouri as did his father and grandfather. He faithfully served his Lord as pastor of LCMS (Lutheran Church Missouri Synod) congregations in Ft. Benton Montana; Wagner South Dakota; Linn KS and started a mission congregation Christ Lutheran Church in Topeka KS. He served various Kansas congregations as vacancy pastor during his retirement years. At this Easter season we are reminded of the gift but also the brevity of life. With hope, joy, and all confidence in the Lord we proclaim the Easter message 'I Know That My Redeemer Lives!" Praise and glory be to God! Visitation and funeral services will be held on Friday, April 17 at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Champaign, Illinois. Visitation will be from 9am 10am, followed by funeral services at 10:30am. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Concordia Seminary, St. Louis MO; pastoral scholarships.

My sister, Phyllis Hartung attended Immanual Lutheran school at the same time as Gene and Arlette. Phyllis and Lette were best friends. Phyllis died in 2023, a few days short of her 99th birthday.

Rev. Eckhardt was the reason Marguerite started church when he did his walks asking everyone to attend his church services. That was his early days in Topekas' Christ lutheran chuch. She died 2 years ago in March. Maybe they will see each other. Let your hearts be consoled.

To the Eckhardt Family:
I am sorry to here of Pastor's passing but I know that his belief has now set him free. During the time I worked with him, I knew he was someone who really believed and he taught me so much. My prayers are with your family in your time of need.

I have fond memories of Pastor Eckhardt and his family. My family was part of the mission church of Christ Lutheran. I remember Pastor Eckardt's easy laughter and humor, creating a comfortable and welcoming environment. Also of strong recall was how his expanding family would be piled in the back pew of the church every Sunday. God bless all of you!

To the Eckhardt Family: Pastor Eckhardt confirmed me years ago as he was an interim pastor at St. John's in Alma, Kansas. He was such an inspiration and was very much missed when he moved on. May you share all the fond memories as we back here in Kansas are doing.

To the Eckhardt Family: Pastor Eckhardt served as an interim pastor in Alma, Kansas during my 8th grade year at St. John's Lutheran Church. He confirmed me and I remember those days with happy memories of him and my family along with my grandchildren are still members of St. John's in Alma. Easter Sunday is most appropriate that he went home to his father in heaven. Peace be with your family as you recall all the happy memories and blessings.

Dear Family, especially JoAnne: Your dad had a powerful impact on my life. He and Alma Juergensen were the two main reasons why I entered church work, first as a DCE and now as a pastor.

He was a blessing to so many people.

God's continued strength and presence be with you as you mourn his earthly departure from us, but rejoice that He is now in the eternal presence of His heavenly Father and family.
