Matthew Murchison Obituary

Matthew Michael Murchison, 21, son of Michael Murchison of Independence, MO and. Deborah Shanahan of Kansas City, MO. was killed in action on August 4th, 2007 in Baghdad, Iraq. Matthew was born in Hutchinson, Kansas on October 11, 1985. Matt's family lived in the Hutchinson area until 1990. In 1990 Matt's family moved to the Stanley Kansas area. Matt attended schools in the Blue Valley School District until 1995 when Matt's family moved to the Olathe, Kansas are where he continued his schooling. Matt attended Indian Creek Elementary School, Pioneer Trail Middle School and graduated from Olathe East High School in 2004. At Pioneer Trail and Olathe East Matt was active in football, wrestling, and mischief. Matt's ambition all through high school was to join the military and to eventually become a policeman. Matt was always loyal to his friends and would do anything he had to do in their time of need. In September 2005 Matt enlisted in the US Army. Matt went through basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO and was then stationed in Hanau, Germany from March 2006 until November 2006. In November 2006 Matt was deployed to Iraq a military policeman in the 127th MP Company, 720th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade. In April 2007 Matt came home on R & R and was able to see many of his friends and relatives. Matt's maternal grandmother (Jane Perry) was dying of cancer in Florida and Matt was able to visit her for the last time. Jane Perry died June 6, 2007. She was so very proud of her Grandson Matthew and felt like she was letting him down by not being able to live until he returned from Iraq. Little did we know she was clearing a place in heaven for him with God. Matt was killed at 2248-hrs Baghdad time on August 4, 2007 by an IED explosion. Two of Matt's best friends were with him and were injured. The family feels comfort to know that Matt was doing what he wanted and was with friends. We are also concerned for his injured friends and hope God helps them to find peace and recover from their wounds. Matt will receive the following honors posthumously: the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Combat Action Badge and was promoted to the rank of Specialist. I did not know Matt in person, but I married one of his best friends Lee. I have heard so many stories about him that I feel he was a part of my life as well. The love and admiration my husband has for Matt is unlike any I have seen. Thank you Matt for being so great to Lee. You are forever missed.

February 26, 2021

I knew Murch in basic training and AIT (6 months straight.) I got to know Murch well because both of our last names ended in Mu, and because of Army organizational skills, that meant Murch and I were always near each other. I feel I got to know him well over that period. Funny as hell is what stands out the most to me.

I was in Iraq too when we learned of his passing in a Stars and Stripes article. Me and a few buddies who also attended basic training with Murch were saddend to hear the news. By chance, we were all in the same platoon with him in basic and knew him well.

Condolences to his family and loved ones.

Merry Christmas, Matthew. What a fun year we had. Meeting more of your Army gang was such a joy. Hope to continue a yearly MURCHFEST. Kiss Granny and Poppy for me and if you can find Michele, give her a big hug and kiss. Love you so much and wish we could have just one more smile. Keep watching over us and know we are doing alright. Love you.

i just want you to know that you are in my prayers today (Veterans Day 2012). I'm happy that you were able to meet my Stephanie, she was so nervous prior to coming out there, but you all made her feel like family. Spending time with "Murch's" family really meant a lot to her. Please know that Matthew's sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Matthew,
Here we go. Another year. This is 4 and counting. How is this real? I still can't wrap my head around all this. Time has gone by, things have changed, we have changed but one thing has not. Missing you. Every day, I think of you. That has been my fear that we all stop remembering. Some will and have, but we won't. You are in our hearts and a part of us. We love and miss you so much. Kiss everyone up there for me and till we meet again, baby. I love you.

Sweet Matthew,
Christmas was good this year for me. I think Dad had a rough time. No tree for him this year. Watch over him, please. Now a New Year is upon us and I find myself missing you so much more with each passing day. This will be your 4th year and I am not sure we will be accepting it as easy as the last 3. There are so many people that have joined you in Heaven and I try to close my eyes and see you all. A different reunion, huh?
Well, rest sweet man and know I love and miss you so much. Kiss Granny and Poppy for me.
I love you,

Happy 25th Birthday, Matt. God...I just can't believe this. I had a very rough night last night and today, I figured it was because I went to the hospital about that time 25 years ago. Then shortly after midnight, you arrived. Why did God let us have you then, and now, take you away?

Matthew,
I know it's been a while but we have to write all over the place, to keep your memory alive. It seems fit today to write as I am writing on the 6th. SHE...started all of this so it seems the right time. Now there is Granny AND Poppy with you. How lucky are you? The only grandchild in Heaven with his grandparents. I am so jealous.
2 years has passed. It still does not seem real but I know it is. It hurts but the pain is manageable. I just want you to know, just because we might be getting better, we do NOT and WILL NOT, forget you. I will make sure NO ONE does.
I am just trying to get better so I can live what life I still have, like you wanted me to. Not really sure what that is, but everyone says you would not want me to cry and be depressed. So, I am working hard to get better. Just know this sucks...really bad.
So many people love you and miss you and hopefully we will keep that love, headed your way.
I miss and love you more each day.
Till we meet again, sweet man.
Love,

To Matts family, you are my family and this country owes you the world for your service and your sons service. "MATT" I love you brother.... you arent alone in the pain that you feel. the movie on hbo based on the true story was a tearjerker for my family and myself as chance was a 2nd cousin. i also lost my cousin steve on 2-14-09 and his funeral was hard enough just seeing the american flag on his casket explained everything for me. having 2 brothers in the war im in the middle our family cant be torn apart like it happened to a family known as the hubbards from clovis ca. anyways im sorry for your loss and i know matthew, chance, steve, nate, jared and all the other young men who gave their life for our freedom and country wont be forgotten.

Happy 23rd Birthday, sweet man. I wish I could give you a hug and kiss this morning but my sending kisses up to Heaven will have to do. What a week, huh? DC was a journey I will never forget. Major.. took me around the MALL and the memorials, the momuments and most of all Arlington was amazing yet so emotional. When you died, I guess we were all in shock and at least for me, I could not feel a thing. Going to DC made that time, come back and slap me back into reality. Your not being here, hit me hard as I am still crying as I write this. God, Matthew, we miss you. I can't think of anything more to say other than I love you so much and we all need you to help us. Help Dad and Sa. I think we all are trying to help each other but Dad always keeps things in and Sa...she needs you now. Be with her.
So, Happy Birthday. Hope Heaven gives you another special day. Kiss Granny for me and tell her I love her. I love and miss you both.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Matthew, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

To the Murchison family: As we approach the holiday where we celebrate our independence from Great Britian, it gives me a yet another reason to pause and be greatful to all the men and women over the years who have given their lives for our freedom. It has been almost a year since your son/brother/nephew gave the ultimate sacrifice. Please know that he will always be remembered as a hero. I would like to express my condolences for the family, though i have never met M. Murchison i appreciate everything he has done serving our country. For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed

But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

For those missing in action;
for those who didn’t make it home.
I know you’re in God’s presence you are not alone.
For every neatly folder flag;
for every shattered family
I will do the only thing I know to dignify your memory.

I salute you, allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
my humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.

I salute you .

Every second you sacrificed
I hold you in my prayers.
So with one hand on my heart and the other in the air;

I salute you, allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
my humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.

I salute you allow me the honor to salute you with
permission let me say even though I hold no rank know
that from my heart my humble gratitude comes from the
deepest part.

I salute you

Our hearts are laden with sorrow at the loss of Matthew. It is with bottomless sadness and inadequate words that we send our love and prayers to you. To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

As Mathew's Commanding Officer it was truly an honor for me to have served beside such a honroable and noble young man. My fondest memories of Mathew was his smile, courage and dedication to duty. A selfless servant who never complain about the long hours while patrolling out in dangerous streets of Iraq or providing security during a local meeting with Iraqi officals. You knew that you could always count on Matt.

Michael, Deborah and Melissa words cannot describe how sorry I am for your loss. Your son was an honorable and was well-respected young man by everyone throughout this command. Matt will never be forgotten and will always have a special place in the hearts of every Soldier within the 127th Military Police Company. It was just an honor for me to have served as your son commanding officer.

I visited Matt's funeral today. Though I never met him, I can see how deeply he is loved by friends and family. I used to work with Mike and I wanted to say to him and his family that your son and brother had a beautiful spirit. God bless you all in your time of grief. God will get you through this. We sometimes don't get the answers here on Earth, but I know God's plan is always perfect...whatever it might be. I am so deeply sorry for your lost.

As I read all of the heart touching entries from so many people, I realize how precious this country that we live in is - and I realized that Matthew must have believed in the country that he selflessly served. I thank him for believing in freedom and what this great country stands for. He has paid the ultimate sacrifice so that we might live in freedom and though he has fallen - he is a hero that will never be forgotten. He is a true American hero - rest in peace with God, Matthew. We send our condolences to the Murchison family please know that you are not alone. You are in our thoughts and prayers. May God grant you comfort during this time!

Deb, Mike and Melissa you have my deepest sympathy on the loss of Matthew. I remember the little dark haired boy running around my rooms a few times. He was always happy and smiling. I will remember him that way. Matthew will be missed; but will be in the hearts of all that knew him. I know we have lost touch in the years, but I thought of you guys often. I remmeber the good times we had. I had asked of you all. I thank you for letting him serve our country so that the children I still care for will have a safe place to live. You will always be in my prayers and thoughts. God Bless you. Love ya!

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

I would like to take just a moment of your time in a very upseting time to say THANK YOU and let you know how Proud so many American people are of your son even though we have never met him or your family. There is a very small percentage of people today that are willing to give there life with no questions only pride, honor, and respect. That says what a true man and hero he truly was. I am so sorry for your lose. Words seem so meaningless at this time when you have lost someone close, but just know in your hearts that there are many many people that are VERY PROUD of him.

I am so sorry. God bless you in this difficult time. Thank you for Matthew's love of country, his honor, his service, and for his sacrifice. I did not know him personally, but through our work, I am acquainted with his uncle John. I could hear the pride in John's voice as he spoke of his nephew.

I have a niece serving also in Iraq, flying medevac. We often spoke of our "good kid" relatives.

God give you strength.

To the family and friends of Matthew,

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to you for the loss of your fallen Hero.

A Soldier's Prayer
(Author unknown)

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

Our thoughts, prayers and thanks are with you.

Below are many people who have never met Matt. As someone who has met and had a short chance to get to know this young man, I'd like to say is a military hero and so much more. In recent years Matt and my sister became best friends (Natalie)he quickly became apart of my family. He was a fine, caring, good young man. Before his service each time I visited "home" he was there...making laughs joking...sitting and relaxing, never minding all the buzz that is created around my family. He seemed to truly enjoy his life.

Matt I just want to say that the Ogilvie and Cheers families love you and miss you.

To the Murchison family...thank you for sharing such a wonderful young man with our family.

A mere "thank you" for the loss of a life to keep our country free seems so little. May your faith in God help you through this sorrowful time. Your son and your family have paid the ultimate price in keeping us free. I am so sorry for your loss.

I do not know your son. I do not know your family. But I want to say thank you to him for serving our country and for fighting for our freedoms. Without brave people like Matthew our country and our world would be totally different. Thank you for allowing him to serve our country--you should be very proud. I'm very sorry for your loss.
