Sending my condolences to (all) his family! I always loved attending the Cummings family reunions in Kansas every 3 years, seeing/chatting with Bob (everyone). He took on the "job" of keeping the Cummings family records till his death. My mother, Antoinette Rose Cummings Downie, was the youngest of the original 10 siblings. I was born and grew up in southern California, now live in Kingsville, TX, 44 years now. I miss going to the reunions/unable to now.

I will really miss Uncle Alan. My heart goes out to my Mom (his sister)and Uncle Alan's family - Aunt Gretchen, Jeff, David, and Greg. I know we weren't ready to lose him but I am comforted that he is with Grandma & Grandpa Cummings (his parents) & Aunt Rita (his sister). Thanks to Uncle Alan, we have learned our heritage and history. He worked so hard on it along with organizing the reunions and did such an awesome job. He even made descriptive name tags for our big family reunions - you know that wasn't a little job! It won't be the same. I got closer to my Uncle Alan through e-mails and really enjoyed them. We are very blessed to have such a wonderful family. I will cherish the good memories and be reminded that we need to make the most of each day and enjoy our moments with family and friends.

I remember Uncle Alan coming back to Kansas in the summers and working on "projects" to help his mother. He was such an active man and it is beautiful to see his energy and passion for life passed down to his children.

I have personally been influenced by Uncle Alan in gaining an interest in genealogy and I think of him often when I am ferreting out family information.

I will greatly miss my Uncle Alan.

Dear Gretchen, Jeff, Greg and David,
It was numbing to hear of Uncle Alan’s sudden death, and it’s so very difficult to find the words to tell you how sorry I am that you have lost such a wonderfully loving husband and father. I am enormously grateful that I was able to spend time with him and Gretchen at the Cummings family reunion in Valley Falls this past June. Alan had a tremendous sense of family, which was evident in his hard work in gathering the Cummings family genealogy. All of us appreciate the long hours and selfless efforts he spent in piecing together the family puzzle. Not to mention all the love and laughter he shared with us. What an inspiration! And Aunt Jeanie – I am crying as I write this – words fail me, except that I want to say how sorry I am that you have lost your brother. Yet the one thing that can make me smile is remembering how much mom and Alan loved to laugh and enjoy life – and I know that they would want us all to remember the good times…

Gretchen and Family,
I didn't get to know Alan like I would have liked. He was such a great help to me as I prepared the addresses and family letters for the Cummings reunions. I surely will use the helps he left me. God bless you and your family. We will see you soon. Leland and Romona Ward Broxterman

Uncle Alan used to send us educational games (of course we just thought they were cool toys). He taught us to do "string" art & always had a new recipe to share. He would sit thru many ballgames of his great neices & nephews during the hot summer. We love & miss him!

Dorothy/family,
Our hearts are sad at the loss of Alan. He was the "rock/foundation" of the reunions! The void you and Gretchen have to fill is enormous. God be with all of you!

I'm so sorry. I love & miss Uncle Alan and can't seem to get use to the idea. He was the best Uncle and he was wonderful to my kids. I miss being able to talk to him by e-mail. He was such an encourager. Leah & I are glad your all coming to Kansas. We can't wait to see you.

I am so sorry for your loss. Please know that you are in our prayers.

Joan and Richard Wissell

We were fortunate to know Robert Alan, Joan first as his cousin as a child and then we truly became friends after Joan and Richard married. He was always kind, friendly, nice, ready to share an opinion, a ride, a meal, his home and his expertise. These last few years his letters and funny sayings he shared with Joan's Mother Eva were greatly enjoyed by all. Joan is especially glad she and Bob had such a nice telephone discussion just a couple of days before he died.
We will miss him and always remember our times with Bob and Gretchen, especially the week in Maine two years ago. Please accept our deepest sympathy.

I am so sorry!!
My friendship with Bob goes back more than 40 years. Bob was my daughter's teacher in Lincoln in the 60's. I joined the faculty at Smith School in 1969 where Bob and I taught 5th grade for many years. After we both retired a group of active and retired teachers started to meet for pot-luck a few times a year. Bob was always there. We had a large gathering just this past spring. He will be sorely missed.

Please accept my deepest sympathies.

Kind, thoughtful, frugal yet generous, hardworking, cheerful but still a friend with whom you can share a gripe once in a while. People will benefit for years from his extensive genealogy efforts. But best of all his beautiful irises will be a living memorial!
