Stephen Wempe Obituary

Funeral services for Stephen C. Wempe, 57, of Lawrence KS, will be 1:30 p.m., Thursday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Mr. Wempe died September 15, 2007 at his home in Lawrence, Kansas. He was born February 3, 1950 in Lawrence, KS, the son of Dr. William W. and Margaret (Clark) Wempe. He attended Lawrence Public Schools and was a graduate of Lawrence High School in 1968, where he was a high school All-American football player. He also attended the University of Kansas after graduation from high school. Mr. Wempe raised horses with his father in Douglas County. He was a former carpenter. He was a member of the American Shetland Pony Club and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He was also an avid hunter & fisherman. Survivors include his daughter, Stephanie Wempe of Lawrence, KS; his father, Dr. W.W. Wempe of Lawrence, KS; three brothers, Dr. Michael Wempe of Odessa, TX, Pete Wempe and K.C. Wempe, both of Lawrence, KS; and one sister, Nancy Swearingen of Lawrence, KS. He was preceded in death by his mother and one sister, Patty Transmeier. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. The family suggests memorial contributions to Oncology Department at Lawrence Memorial Hospital and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
