Sylvester "Vess" Scott

Sylvester “Vess” Scott, 80, Topeka, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at Midland Hospice House. He was born Nov. 26, 1924, in Kelly, the son of William and Mary Fienhage Scott. Mr. Scott served in the Army in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, Philippine Liberation. He was discharged with the rank of sergeant. He retired from Topeka State Hospital, maintenance department. He was a member of Holy Name Church, Knights of Columbus No. 8059 and the American Legion. Vess and Eileen I. Menke were married July 9, 1946, in St. Kilian Minn. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Ronald Scott and his wife, Sharon, Dover, and Lynn Scott and his wife, Ann, Topeka; four daughters, Bonna “Jo” Cromwell and her husband, Harold, and Debbie Bille and her husband, Paul, all of Topeka, Darlene Harberts and her husband, Dennis, Stevensville, Mont., and Elaine Leiker and her husband, Leo, Lawrence; his sisters, Ethel Hedke and her husband, Arnold, Manhattan, Darlene Broxterman and her husband, Ralph, Vermillion, and Rita Neff and her husband, Clinton, Topeka; 18 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Duane and Jim Scott; three brothers; and two sisters. Mr. Scott will lie in state and the family will greet friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Holy Name Church at 1114 S.W. 10th St., Topeka. A Knights of Columbus rosary will be prayed at 8 p.m. at the church. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Name Church, with burial following in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Corning.
