William Davenport Obituary

Dr. William Randolph Davenport, 95, was born on Dec. 8, 1925, and left this earthly life on Feb. 10, 2021.
He is now in the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Randy was born in Pineville, Missouri, to Jesse Mitchell and Helene Vail Davenport. The fifth of six children, Randy grew up on a farm in rural southwest Missouri, where he learned the value of hard work, perseverance and love of family. Those early life lessons served him well, as he went on to accomplish much during his life.
Randy enlisted in the Navy near the end of WWII, and was sent for naval training at the University of Louisville where he completed his bachelor's degree in chemistry at University of Louisville. It was at U of L that he met his wife of 73 years, Janet Chambers. He went on to earn his master's and doctorate of Education at the University of Arkansas. After working as a teacher and principal in the public schools, he was a professor of education at both Butler University and the University of Michigan, Flint, serving as chairman of the department. In 1969, he became president of Campbellsville College (University), in Campbellsville, Kentucky, serving in that position until his retirement in 1988.
Randy was passionate about the Gideon Ministry that provides scripture placement in the United States and internationally. He held many positions in this organization, serving as international president for several years. Baptist by denomination and a member of Campbellsville Baptist Church, Randy served in many capacities, including serving as choir director, Sunday school teacher and deacon. His singular goal was to serve the Lord and find opportunities to show Jesus to others.
In public, Randy held many leadership positions in various organizations. At home, he was a kind and gentle father, loving husband and caring grandfather, who had the time to answer questions, listen to concerns or tell stories. He loved music, books and poetry. Until his final days, he could still quote entire poems he had learned in his childhood.
Randy is survived by his wife, Janet, and his children: Liz Wilson (Bill), Martin (Sue), Mary and Susan; his seven grandchildren: BJ, Jon, Mike Wilson; Ben Stewart (Shannon), Jenny Davenport, Abbie Stovall (Daniel), Julie Davenport; three great-grandchildren: Noah Stewart, Braeden Stewart, William Stovall; and Kim Byram. He was Uncle Randy to many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters: Melvin Davenport, Lawrence Davenport, Joe Davenport, Louise Dill and Jessie Atkinson
Deep gratitude from the family to all that loved and cared for him over the past several years: Louise, Rita, Josh, Mary, Patricia, Debbie, Margaret, Lindsey and Hosparus Health of Green River.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts of Gideon Bibles or donations to Campbellsville University.
Services were held on Sunday, Feb. 14, 2021, at Ransdell Chapel on the campus of Campbellsville University.
Parrott & Ramsey Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

I loved our Bible study times in the Davenport living room. I still pass along my favorite lesson he taught from Colossians that of course included lots of scientific illustrations. Sorry I learned too late of his passing to be there for you, Susan and family.

Dr. Davenport was a wonderful, loving man of GOD. He loved C-ville and he loved his kids at the college. Carol and I had the wonderful fortune to be there when he was leading the college. Years after we had graduated, we came home to visit, and in the middle of a visit with a dignitary from a foreign country, he excused himself and spent 10 minutes with us. That meant the world to us, because he treated us like the extended family we were. In the years to follow, I had accepted a position with Merrill Lynch in Louisville, and he was in the office one day to conduct some business for the college. Upon visiting with him for a couple of minutes, he immediately asked if the business he was conducting could help me in my career? Once again, he reminded me that I was so much more than just a student to him.

He was always a role model for us, and I know without a doubt that he is in heaven, rejoicing with our heavenly father. I truly loved this man, and I know I will see him again one day. I thank GOD for allowing me to know him and to be a part of his life for a few short years. To Susan, and the entire family, what a role model you were given as a father and you all will be in my prayers.

Randy was the personification of a Christian. He was a disciple, he was becoming a disciple and he made disciples. We were fortunate to have known Randy and to be influenced by him for many years. My wife and I were blessed by his friendship in our lives. His faith in Jesus Christ, his compassion for others and his quick wit are what we will always remember. Well done good and faithful servant. Our condolences to those who loved him.

Randy was a blessing to many. His influence in The Gideons International extended far past the three years of his presidency. He was shared his wisdom freely, was a mentor to many, and a blessing to all he meet.

Our beloved "Dr. D." was the very best president of Campbellsville College, during my years in Campbellsville and at the college...He always had a sweet, compassionate smile and such a genuine caring manner and countenance - showing Jesus' love and light to everyone around him!
His office door and home were always open and he still recognized and carried on "meaningful, relevant conversations"-even in the last few yrs.
My heart remembers the Sundays that I sat on the same pew with he and Janet, at Campbellsville Baptist... He would look over and smile at me, saying, " there's my favorite red head!" He always had a Christian, fatherly way of "making my heart smile!"
My sincerest sympathy to Janet, Susan and all the family members...but remember he is walking the streets of gold in Heaven, talking with our Lord, and feeling no pain! God is soooo good!!!

On behalf of all the Chowning family and all of the church family of Saloma Baptist Church, Cathy and I extend our prayers and heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Davenport and all of the extended Davenport family. Dr. Davenport was an exemplary Christian servant leader in all areas of his life. His time as Campbellsville University (College) president, leadership of Gideons International, faithful service at Campbellsville Baptist Church, and involvement in many areas of community activity, evidence his commitment to his Lord Jesus Christ. I will long remember Dr. Davenport in my years of service at Campbellsville University and in my pastoral ministry - he was one of our favorite Gideon speakers at our church - and he fondly called me the “Bishop of Saloma.” We are praying for all of you during this time and thank God for Dr. Davenport’s life and legacy.
