Jack Smith, age 81, of Clarinda, entered into peace Thursday, June 1 at his residence in Clarinda. Funeral services were held 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 6 at St. John Lutheran Church, Clarinda with Pastor Daryl Tompkins officiating. Visitation with the family was held 5-7 p.m., Monday, June 5 at Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda. Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 7. Memorials may be given in his name. Jack Dean Smith was born July 2, 1935 in Clarinda, to Harry Smith and Hazel (Davison) Smith. He grew up in Clarinda and graduated from Clarinda High School in 1953. He was a member of the National Guard for two years. Jack was united in marriage Dec. 10, 1955 to Alberta Buesing at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Yorktown. They moved to Denver, Colorado in 1955 where they lived for three years, returning to Clarinda in 1958 where they raised their family. To this union were born, Cynthia, Randall, Carolyn, Teresa, Shirley and Scott.
Jack worked at Super Value and Hy-Vee grocery stores in the produce and frozen foods department for many years. He later worked in maintenance at Lisle Corporation where he retired. In his retirement, Jack transported cars for Shore Motor Company for many years. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Clarinda where he served as a trustee for six years and was also on the finance committee for three years.
Jack was active in antique car shows. He loved antique cars and has one of his own and has owned several over the years. He also enjoyed his model train sets and woodworking; making several toys for the grandkids. He also collected oil cans and old car memorabilia. Jack and Alberta enjoyed traveling visiting family and friends in many states. Jack enjoyed being with his family and especially enjoyed the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Preceding Jack in death were his parents; brother, Everett "Bus" Smith and wife Violet; sister, Wanda Holmes and husband Jim; brother, Kenneth Smith and wife Lavon; daughter, Shirley Smith; granddaughter, Heather Fisher; step-grandson, Adam Cline and great-granddaughter, Lindsey Fisher.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Alberta Smith of Clarinda; children, Cynthia VanFosson of Shambaugh, Randall Smith and wife Jerri Ann of Stanton, Carolyn Fisher and husband Jerry of Villisca, Teresa Hamilton and husband Jerry of Stanton and Scott Smith and wife Cindy of Red Oak; grandchildren, Joshua VanFosson (Lucinda), David VanFosson (Candace), Cove VanFosson (Brianna), Kady VanFosson, Matt Smith (Christine), Luke Smith (Danielle), Holly Fisher (Nick), Tyler Fisher (Annie), Nicole (Fisher) Bruning (Brandon), BreeAnn Fisher, Jay Hamilton (Rae Jean), Mike Hamilton (Maddy), Amber Hamilton, Allen Hamilton, Staci Cline; 22 great-grandchildren; brother, Ronald Smith and wife Sandra of Clarinda; nieces; nephews and many friends.
