Charles R. (Charlie) Wood, Jr., 86, died Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at Baptist Hospital in Jackson, MS.
Visitation will be 9-11 am Saturday, May 22, 2010, and a celebration of his life will begin at 11 am Saturday, all at Chancellor Funeral Home in Byram.
Mr. Wood was born September 6, 1923 in Anniston, AL. He moved to Jackson in 1959 and founded Transport Systems and later Transport Systems Insurance Agency. His family is still operating both businesses today.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Evelyn Wood; daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Bob Lee; grandsons, Robert (Rob) Lee and Chris (Moose) Lee; great granddaughter, Abigale Alice Jacobs Lee and her mother, Phyliss; brother and sister-in-law, John & Martha Blair; nephew, Jim Hamilton; and nieces, Debi Carlton, Nancy Hamilton and Leigh Ann Campbell.
His parents, Ida & Melvin Hamilton, brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Ann Hamilton, and nephew, Randy Blair preceded him in death.
From the early 1960's he spent many happy days as a member, past President, and later owner of Brookwood Country Club. The year he served as President, he and a group played golf 365 days straight. Rain, shine, or even three holes in the snow with red golf balls.
In the early 1980's he and a group of Anniston High School class mates started the Chink Lott Boys Reunions that are still being held today.
He served for over 10 years from its inception with much pride on the Hinds County Economic Development Board promoting the city, county, and state that he so loved.
The family would like to thank the Baptist Hospital staff from the emergency room, AICU, and Passages Hospice Ministries. Special thanks goes to Dr. Bart Delashment who cared for Mr. Wood for over 20 years.
Since there will be no interment and the family is currently involved in a year long fund raising project for Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital, in lieu of flowers please make memorials to: Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital, Attention: Lynn Griffin, C/O Public Affairs, 2500 N.
