Ernest Joel Hankins, 63, passed Sunday, February 16, 2014 at Crossgates River Oaks Hospital. A service will be held at a later date in the Mississippi State Veterans Cemetery in Newton. Ernest was born on November 17, 1950, in Jackson, the son of the late Robert Monroe and Annie Lou Hankins. A veteran, he served his county in the US Army. While stationed in Germany, he served as an airplane mechanic. For his service, he was awarded the National Defense Medal. Ernest worked for many years as a painter. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed gardening and hunting, he also enjoyed singing and playing his guitar. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by a son and brothers, Thomas, Robert and Steven Hankins. Survivors include: daughter, Joelene Hankins-Bowyer and husband Shawn of Gatesville, TX; granddaughter, Veronika Hankins-Bowyer; brother, Anthony Hankins and wife Jenifer of Bourg, LA; sister, Sarah Matthews and husband John of Brandon and aunt, Pally Crane of Braxton. Memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, www.dav .org
