Capt. Shanks was also involved in the campaign from the Saar River to the Rhine where he was awarded the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster (Multiple Award) for this crusade. The 26th later pushed across Germany and into Czechoslovakia when a cease fire was declared. Fred would remain active in the US Army Reserves and retired as a Colonel.
Returning home to Mississippi, Fred and Francis moved to Jackson where he started his career with the Alcohol and Tobacco division of the U.S. Treasury Department. Mr. Shanks opened the ATF's first office on the Mississippi Gulf Coast in Pascagoula. He later opened an office in Gulfport before being transferred back to Jackson in 1960. He would remain here until his retirement as the north Mississippi area supervisor. I am sorry to hear about Mr. Shanks. My family from the Hitchins to the Knights (three generations) knew each other through church, baseball, high school, and college. He took Cliff and I to a Jackson Mets game and we spent the night at their home, I felt like I was at my mamaw and papaw's house. A great family! I know that he's be missed. To Don , Cliff, and all the Shanks family, my prayers and thoughts are with you.

Thanks Bruno- I remember Fred well and I was at the meeting in 1972 at Jackson, MS. Of all the meeting I attended, this clearly was the most important of all and Fred was responsible for the logistics and meeting all the complex requirements. Additionally, all of us received a Key to City of Jackson from the Mayor, thanks to Fred. He truly was an outstanding combat veteran, ATF agent and most of all, a wonderful person- john

Bruno: Thanks for the info on Fred Shanks. He was an area supervisor when I was SAIC in Miss. He was an outstanding Agent, southern gentleman, and family man. I was a better person when I left Jackson than when I arrived, thanks to Fred and the other fine men and women working for ATF in Miss during difficult times. I will remember the family in my prayers. Jarvis Brewer

Unfortunately they don’t make too many of these super hero’s anymore…..but, then what would you expect from the high tech self indulgent new crop (aka the “me” generation) of today. God bless you Fred for living up to the high standard that you set for your self, as a man, a soldier, and as an ATF Special Agent…may you find peace in you new post of duty.

We loved your daddy and momma. With their deaths, we feel that an important part of our past is now missing, but never forgotten. We cherish our memories as next door neighbors on Garden Park. Your dad was truly "a man's man"! He was kind, gentle, soft-spoken, and yet "oozed" strength by his very countenance. When Winnie learned that her dad had died suddenly at his home, she ran to Fred, who drove her to her dad's house. (Frances kept the children!) May God comfort, console, and bless all of the precious prodigy of these two wonderful people!

It was my great privilege to have known and served as a Special Agent with ATF along side Fred Shanks in Jackson, Mississippi during the mid-1970s. Fred was the Group Supervisor across the hallway from my office; and a Colonel in the Army Reserve at that time. Fred Shanks was always the gentleman, courteous, reasonable, respectful, likeable and very cooperative. I knew Fred was a patriot, but not aware he was a WWII hero as well. May he rest in peace. My profound condolences to his family and many friends. David Barrineau, Special Agent, ATF (Retired)
