George Truett Obituary

Dr. George Wesley Truett, 78, died Thursday, October 28, 2010, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland.
His health had steadily declined following a hip fracture a little over a year ago. He was born May 1, 1932 to Ellis Russell and Martha Truett. He was the fifth of seven children in an extremely loving family. A Memorial Service will be held Monday, November 1, 2010, at 4pm at Wells United Methodist Church. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall.
George was an accomplished athlete and scholar. After graduation from Jackson Tennessee High School he entered Ole Miss on full athletic scholarship. He excelled in football and track and held the high jump record for several years. His plans to play professional football came to an end due to a shoulder injury, eventually leading to a career in medicine.
He graduated from The University of Mississippi Medical School and later completed a residency in orthopedic surgery. He practiced at Baptist Hospital, St. Dominic Hospital, and River Oaks Hospital and for many years served as Chairman of the Finance Committee on the Board of River Oaks. George truly cared about each one of his patients. He received many letters of appreciation for the surgery he provided, as well his kind and personal care.
He was an avid outdoorsman and spent many happy hours hunting and fishing with his sons and son-in-law, Houston, whom George considered another son, and his two labs Sally and Bogey. He enjoyed golf and the companionship with his friends. He never failed to come home from a golf game without a joke that he loved sharing, occasionally more than once. One of his exceptional talents was making beautiful furniture, something he learned at an early age from his father whose occupation was a master craftsman.
For almost twenty years George and his family have been faithful members of Wells United Methodist Church. He loved Sunday mornings visiting with the "pew pals" and hearing the inspiring sermons by his pastor and friend, Keith Tonkel.
George is survived by his beloved wife, Pam; his sons, Brad Truett and his wife, Lisa, Wes Truett; his daughters, DeLynn James and her husband, Billy; Betsy Primos and her husband, Houston; his daughter-in-law, Kristi Hopkins; and his sister-in-law, Gigi Smith and her husband, Jeff. He is also survived by two brothers, Ellis Truett, Ed Truett and his wife, Anne; three sisters, Batrice Glen; Marie Jones, Ann Ross and her husband, Bill; and several devoted and much loved grandchildren.
The Truett family will be forever grateful to Dr. Al Steele and Dr. Nirupa Mohandas for their unfailing care and compassion during the last year of his life.
George was extremely compassionate about the less fortunate and would have appreciated memorials be made to Wells Church Food Pantry, 2019 Bailey Avenue, Jackson, MS 39213.

The creativity may have ceased but not the memories. May the memories of George and these words of comfort sustain you through such a diffcult time. "He is healing the broken hearted ones and is binding up their spots." Psalms 147:3"-Angela (MS)
