Visitation is today from 12:30 to 2:00 pm at First Baptist Church in Magee. Funeral services will follow with interment in Magee Cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his parents Maurice F. and Dorothy Herring of Raymond and his brother, Dr. Maurice Herring, Jr. of Lexington, SC.
He leaves as his survivors: his wife of almost 58 years, Sally of Magee; his two sons, Gene and wife, Dianne Herring of Raleigh; Alan Herring of Holbrook, AZ; his four daughters, Jan and husband, Bill Boteler of Jackson; Beth and husband, Chet Cox of Flowood; Marsha Lane of Macon; Becky and husband, David Gaffney of Birmingham, AL; his three sisters, Judy and husband, Richard Foster of Madison; Jean Berry of Gonzales, LA; Joyce Norman of Austin, TX; sister-in-laws, Ernestine Herring of Lexington, SC; Ann and husband, Bob Greenfield of Raymond; brother-in-law, Harold MItchell of Raymond; 19 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and his beloved Shih Tzu, Harley.
He was born on May 31, 1930 in Duck Hill, MS. His childhood years were spent in Duck Hill, Edwards, Oxford, and Utica.
He received his undergraduate education at Hinds Jr. College and the University of MS. He attended medical school for two years at the University of MS. and the final 2 years at the University of TN, graduating third in his class as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society in 1955. He did his internship at MS Baptist Hospital in Jackson. He served two years in US Public Health services at the USPS hospital in New Orleans and with the Coast Guard.
Following his service, he took his experience with TB patients and joined the staff of the Miss State Sanatorium in 1958. In 1968 he joined the Magee Medical and Surgical Clinic, practicing until he retired on June 1, 1995.
Doctor, physician, and healer of bodies and hearts, he cared for the entire patient and their family, with great compassion, love, knowledge and also a touch of humor.
Doc was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Magee for 50 years, where he served as a deacon, sang in the senior choir and taught Sunday school.
He was active in the Magee Chamber of Commerce, as well as other community affairs.
Doc was a woodworker, learning in his teen years to make furniture and cabinets. Each piece was built from carefully chosen prized wood. The story was always included with the finished article. He also loved the woods, lakes, and rivers that his Creator made. He was happy teaching others to fish and hunt, passing along his love and knowledge to the next generation.
Telling stories about family history, talking to anyone he met, making all people comfortable in his presence, he shared his love and his great heart with all of his patients, his friends and his family. We will miss you, Doc.
The children would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Randy Voyles, Dr. Bobby Graham, Dr. Mike Byers, Dr. Karen Bruce, and Dr. Rudy Runnels as well as Carolyn Stubbs, his office nurse who continued to care for him after his retirement.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Building Fund of First Baptist Church, 222 1st St. N.W., Magee, MS 39111 or Magee General Hospital Health Trust Foundation, 300 3rd Ave S.E., Magee, MS 39111.

Dear Jan and entire family,
Your dad's life is truly one to celebrate. He was a very special person and doctor to everyone. My grandmother, Phoebe Ponder, held him in the highest regard with his professional knowledge and "bed side" manner. You and your entire family are very special to our hearts. Please know that we will continue to keep all of you in our thoughts and prayers.

Dearest Sally, Gene, Jan, Beth, Alan, Marcia, and Becky, I was so saddened to hear of my cousin's passing...It is so hard to say farewell to your parent - even if we know it is time. Take comfort in knowing that he is with the Lord while your Grandparents, Gracie, Buddy, and all the other Herring and Locke relatives are welcoming his arrival. Remember and speak of him often because your happy family memories will keep him close until you meet again.

Dear Miss Sally and all the Herring kids,
Y'all mean so much to our family. Dr. Herring was truly a great man, not only to us, but for all of Magee. I will never forget his never-waning smile, warmth and compassion. I regret that I can't get home for the funeral. My heart is with y'all during this most difficult time.

To one of my favorite cousin's families I send my prayers and would have been there if it was possible. I know that you have lost the anchor of your family and you will all be in my thoughts and prayers. I will never forget what he said about Momma when she passed away. Those wonderful words he so eloquently gave to us have sustained and helped me through difficult times when I thought about her. Please know that my love, prayers, and thoughts will be with you always. Love to all, Carol

My thoughts and prayers are with you during this time.

I had tremendous respect and affection for Dr. Herring. I knew him as my personal physician, through his loving care for my parents and his gentle loving presence when my father died, and through his work relationship with my sister (Margie) at Magee General Hospital.

Even after I moved to Clinton and changed healthcare providers, I enjoyed chatting with him whenever our paths crossed. He always asked me about my health and my job in nursing education. He especially enjoyed updating me about his family, and particularly a granddaughter who I had taken care of when she was born prematurely at MS Baptist NICU.

Please know that Dr. Herring was very much admired and loved by many people, and will be greatly missed.

To Sally, Gene, Jan, Beth, Alan, Marcia and Becky--I just want you to know that your dad was one of my favorite cousins, and I'm sure you know that my mom, Grace, was his favorite aunt. His homily at her funeral in 1993 was something I will never forget and for which I will always love him dearly. Grace and Buddy loved Jack Locke and he was very special to them. The world has lost a wonderful man and the whole Locke and Herring clan has lost our dear one. I wish I could be with you in person, but I send my love, thoughts, and prayers to all of you.

Uncle Jack is a man who is larger than life. I remember his candor and forthrightness when I was going through a difficult time. His understanding and caring. He commanded respect with his demeanor, and when he spoke with his soft voice people would stop to listen because you knew what he had to say was important. My thoughts and prayers are with you Aunt Sally, Gene, Alan, Jan, Beth, Marsha and Becky and your families. Love, Deb
