John Blossman Obituary

John Richard Blossman, a well-known Gulf Coast businessman and community leader, died of cancer Monday morning, March 30, 2009, at his home in Ocean Springs. He was 65.
John lived a meaningful life and was a blessing to his family and all who knew him. He will be remembered for his kind, gentle way and his humility. His spirituality served as an example and great encouragement to others and he was always there when needed.
His humor and optimism lifted those around him. To the very end, he laughed and enjoyed life and those he loved.
A native of New Orleans and resident of Ocean Springs since 1951, John graduated from Yale University in 1966 and Vanderbilt School of Law in 1969. Upon graduation from law school, he joined Blossman Gas, Inc., the company founded by his father, E. W. Blossman. From 1970 - 1972 he took a leave of absence from the company to serve in the U. S. Army, during the Vietnam era.
At the time of his death, he was Chairman of the Board of Blossman Gas, now the 10th largest retail propane dealer in the country.
A widely respected member of the propane industry, he served terms as President of both the Mississippi Propane Gas Association and the National Propane Gas Association.
He had also been active in the banking industry, having served for over twenty years as a Director of Citizens National Bank, now a part of Wachovia Bank.
A member of St. Johns Episcopal Church in Ocean Springs, he was also a long-standing supporter of the Gulf Coast YMCA.
Since 1973 he has been an active member of the Board of Directors of French Camp Academy, in French Camp, MS and Chamberlain Hunt Academy, of Port Gibson, MS most recently serving as their Chairman from 1994 to 2009.
A former Director of the Ocean Springs Chamber of Commerce, John was an ardent supporter of his beloved Ocean Springs. He and his wife Courtney were key organizers of the Walter Anderson Museum of Art, and were actively involved in efforts to protect Ocean Springs' historic charm and quality of life. He has been involved in numerous Gulf Coast organizations and was recently awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the City of Ocean Springs.
He was preceded in death by his parents, E. Woodrow Blossman and Arthemise Alsina Blossman.
Survivors include his wife, Courtney C. Blossman; three children, daughter, Lorie B. (Michael) Brodowicz, of Charlotte, NC, stepson, Stuart E. (Ann) Weidie, of Asheville, NC, and stepdaughter, Courtney W. (Enrique) Carballido, of Perth, Australia, sister Patricia Burke, of Hendersonville, NC; and nine grandchildren, Emily, Jacob, Joshua, Isaac, Samuel and Olivia Weidie, and Benjamin, Lynn and Matthew Brodowicz.
Visitation will be from 5-8 pm today at the Ocean Springs Chapel of Bradford O'Keefe Funeral Home, 911 Porter Street, Ocean Springs. Funeral services will be at 12 soon Thursday, April 2, 2009, at First Presbyterian Church, 921 Ocean Avenue, Ocean Springs, with visitation preceding the service from 10 am - 12 noon.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to French Camp Academy, One Fine Place, French Camp, MS 39745, or to the Gulf Coast YMCA, 1810 Government Street, Ocean Springs, MS 39564.

Courtney,
What a wonderful human being.A man is not measured by the loudness of his voice but rather by the depth of his soul. John was truly a giant as I have read in all the caring condolences on this guest book.
I first knew John as a freshman at Andover, then as a lacrosse teammate, a classmate at Yale, a manager of the varsity soccer team, a roommate, a travel companion to Europe, a host in Ocean Springs after the devestation caused by Camille, and a great weekend in Destin and as an usher in my wedding. John was the most compassionate and even tempered friend I have ever had.
As I think you know, he even visited me several years ago when I was recovering from hip-replacement surgery.Although time and distance kept us from seeing more of each other, just hearing his friendly voice on the phone always brought a smile to my face. What a man.
With warmest thoughts,
Tom Israel

Courtney ~ All who knew John can only remember "here was a gentle, good man". His life was a testimony of a person who gave much of himself and his possessions to others through sharing. I truly liked
John Blossman, as I believe everyone who knew him did also. He is with God the Father now for Eternity, though he will be missed by so many here.

Courtney, I am so sad to hear about John. I have felt things were not right for a week or so when I looked at the pictures from when Kathy and I visited last spring. I am sure though that he and Curtis are creating some sort of mischief for their parents to sort out. Hope to see you soon. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Love Cecily

There is a port of no return, where ships
May ride at anchor for a little space
And then, some starless night, the cable slips
Leaving an eddy at the mooring place...
Gulls, veer no longer.Sailor rest your oar.
No tangled wreckage will be washed ashore.

Crossing the Bar

Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;

For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crost the bar.

Unfortunately, I have not had the privilege of meeting and knowing John's family, but I did have the privilege of growing up with John as a kid in Ocean Springs in the 50's. My Dad was the coach at OSHS and John and I were on different socio-economic levels. You would have never known that from John. He was a normal all around boy who liked to play the same games we all did. Over the years, the few times I had the opportunity to be around John it was apparent to me he hadn't changed. He was the same friendly kid I grew up with. I wish now I had made more of an effort to be around him more over our adult life, I know he would have welcomed that.

I am sorry to see this happen to John. I had known him & Courtney many years ago at St. John's. It was when I was teaching a senior youth Sunday school class that I requested John take over for me since I was reading for Orders for the priesthood... and he did. Too, when my family and I lived in Jackson when I was very young, my father worked for John's father, Woodrow, for Blossman Gas. Without question, John is in a wonderful place, but will be missed by his loved ones.
