Kathryn Thompson Obituary

Kathryn Schenk Thompson

Madison - Kathryn Schenk Thompson died peacefully with family by her side on April 20, 2018 at St. Catherine's Village in Ridgeland, MS.

She and her twin brother were born on July 12, 1923 in Columbus, Ohio. Kay was blessed to have lived a wonderful life. She was married for 51 years to her college sweetheart, George H. Thompson. They lived most of their married life in Greensboro, N.C., where her husband was Vice President and later President of Guilford Builders Supply. Kay's two brothers, Ed Schenk and Otto Schenk (Kay's twin brother), lived in Greensboro along with their parents, Frieda and Edward Schenk. They hosted many family gatherings especially at Christmas where Jesus' birthday party was a tradition for children and adults. Kay and George treasured their time at their mountain home in Valle Crucis, N.C. She was a gracious lady and the consummate hostess.

Kay went to Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory, N.C. where she majored in theater and met her future husband. In her early married life she taught swimming and horseback riding to disabled children. She was a talented artist in many mediums - pastels, oils and watercolors. She owned the "Hayloft" antique shop at their home in the country near Carlson Farms. Being dog lovers, Kay and George had several dogs. She was active in her community and volunteered at the Greensboro Historical Society. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Greensboro where she helped at the reception desk, with her dog Lulu by her side.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and her two brothers. She leaves 3 children: Pam (David) Allen, of Ridgeland, MS; Mark (Jennifer) Thompson, of Moneta, VA; and Jeff (Alison) Thompson, of Summerfield, N.C.; 7 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She was also blessed to be a vital part of her nieces, nephews and their spouse's lives.

Kay and George were affectionately called "KayK" and "Goat" by their grandchildren and great grandchildren. They both had tremendous influence in the lives of their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

There will be a Celebration of Life service at First Lutheran Church in Greensboro at 4:00pm Saturday, April 28. The family will greet friends in the Church parlor and narthex following the service.

Special thanks are given to the staff at St. Catherine's Village and her personal caregiver Bettye Johnson. They cared for her with love and dignity.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Mississippi Blood Services (115 Tree Street, Flowood, MS 39232), First Lutheran Church (3600 W. Friendly Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27410-4812), or a charity of your choice.

Warm Summer Sun

Warm summer sun,
Shine kindly here,
Warm southern wind,
Blow softly here.
Green sod above,
Lie light, lie light.
Good night, dear heart,
Good night, good night.
