Mark Mayfield Obituary

Mark Mayfield

Ridgeland, MS

Mark Stevens Mayfield, 57, passed away on June 27, 2014. He was a great man, a loving father and husband, a true Southern gentleman, and a gentle human being. A Christian, he is now at rest with his Heavenly Father. Born in 1956 to Charles and Dorothy (Dell) Mayfield in Laurel, Mississippi, he was the first of their three children. Mark spent his very early years growing up in Bay Springs, Mississippi, and in 1962 his family moved to Jackson, Mississippi. He graduated from Jackson Preparatory School and later attended the University of Mississippi and the University of Mississippi School of Law where he earned his Juris Doctorate degree. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Upon receiving his law degree in 1981, he came back to Jackson and practiced real estate law with his father for 19 years until his father's death in 2002. Mark met the love of his life, Robin Reeves, at the Mississippi Bar Convention, and they were married in 1982. They are blessed with two sons, Owen and William, both of whom graduated from St. Andrew's Episcopal School and the University of Mississippi. Mark was an active and respected member of First Baptist Church Jackson and was also involved in Bill Boteler's Sunday School class, with community activities and the many interests of his sons. He was an engaged member of the St. Andrew's Episcopal School community. Mark was an influential figure in Jackson business and many social and political organizations. He was a member of the Mississippi and American Bar Associations. A participant in the Tri-County Mountain Bike Association, Mark was an exercise and fitness enthusiast who loved riding his mountain and road bikes with his friends and two sons. He enjoyed swimming and running and completed many triathlons during his life. Mark always enjoyed spending quality time with his family and friends, such as his Primos breakfast gatherings and Friday lunches of the Jackson Club at River Hills with good friends and colleagues. He was a man who always put the interests of others first and had a pure, authentic interest in everyone he met. He was a mentor, a coach, and an important role model for so many in his life. He absolutely loved connecting people and bringing them together. He had a great love for the State of Mississippi and the United States of America. Always thinking of others, Mark deeply loved God, his family and his friends. He exhibited a genuine servant's spirit in all of his relationships. Mark is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Dell, younger brother, Russ, and sister, Robin. Mark is survived by his wife, Robin; sons, Owen and William; uncles, Charlie Fail (Dot) and Joseph Fail (Nancy); cousins, Donna Alexander (William), Cy Fail (Pamela), Joey Gardner (James), Brandi Callison (Alan), and many second cousins, nieces and nephews, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law, who loved him dearly.

Visitation will be held at First Baptist Church Jackson on Monday, June 30th, from 4pm to 7pm and on Tuesday, July 1st, at 9am. The service will be held at First Baptist Church Jackson on Tuesday, July 1st, at 10am. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Foreign Missions and the Tri-County Mountain Bike Association.

Mark was a unique and honorable person . I asked him to help me with a few issues and he always made time and seemed as though it was his joy to be able to help . It hurts my heart that he has been stolen from us . I could have learned so much from him . Our groups never had a better guide and leader . I miss him constantly as do so many .

The book is about to go off line. But I want the family to know that not one of us who came to know Mark Mayfield last year will ever forget him. I cannot remove his name from my email address list. Somehow I want to think that he is still around. He was a treasure for those of us who could add him to our list of friends. May God bless you with HIS peace and comfort. Mary and Holden O'Gwynn

Mark was a gentleman, a great intellect, and a person gifted with the ability to be a true, faithful friend to all who met him. I will always remember Mark's gentle smile. He had that ability to express disagreement in a respectful and helpful way or to encourage greater effort of thought by simply listening and asking sensible questions. All who knew him were enriched. The Lord has received an humble spirit to dwell with Him.

You only have to talk to my brother, Hal W. Dale and you know Mark even if you have never met him. He spoke of the hospitality of both he and his wife, having him in their home on special occasions. He was truly a friend and will be greatly missed.

I am still in disbelief. I was Mark's roommate in Law School, and a fraternity brother. All the qualities expressed in these pages were equally true back then. Truly a man imbued of great character and compassion. RIP Mayf.

To: Robin and sons, Will and Owen. My husband and I became acquainted with Mark during the early days of 2014. He was the proverbial "class act". Any conversation would begin and end with a flash of that 'sweet' smile. Our anguish at your loss is shared by those of us who came to know him this year. May God give you comfort and peace - HIS comfort and peace. Holden and Mary O'Gwynn

Robin, Owen and William,

We are so saddened at the loss of your husband and father, Mark, whom we counted as a friend not only from First Baptist Church, but also through work associations over the years in the legal profession. Mark was the classic "gentleman lawyer" to deal with and to be around. We know that our Lord will sustain you through these difficult days ahead, but know also that our prayers are being lifted up for each of you.

My dear Robin, you won't remember me but I was a longtime friend of your wonderful Mother and have kept in touch with your brother, John, through the years. My heart aches for you and your family during this sad time, and I pray you find comfort in knowing your dearest Mark has found peace with the Lord. Please know you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers each day. God bless and keep you all in His loving arms.

My prayers will continue for the Mayfield family for I had the pleasure of meeting Mark through business relations and found him to be extremely nice and genuine. On times that we were with him I felt the spirit of our Lord all around him so I know he loved our
Savior. He will be truly missed as a business relations but most of all for his friendship that was made from that relation. May each of you truly find peace in our Lord for Mark will be here in spirit for all of you.

Robin, Owen & William,
May God comfort you in this pain & loss you know now. Be assured that He sees you and knows how deep your pain is. He cares for you and knows just how to use each affliction we face though we can't when we are walking through it. Hang on to what you know of God to already be true and to the faith He has gifted you with. He will strengthen you though you grieve deeply now. May your fellowship with Jesus sustain you as you are held up & loved in Christ in your "hour" of need. May you feel the love and prayers of the many who walk beside you now and are lifting you up.

I knew Mark from childhood when he lived in Bay Springs and I grew up with his aunts and uncles and cousins, knew his parents too, especially his sweet mom. Although I did not know him as an adult, I know he was a wonderful man based on everyone I know that knew him - just doesn't seem to be a person who knew him that didn't have wonderful things to say. My heart is broken for everyone who knew and loved him -- you will all be in my prayers.

June 30, 2014

I always enjoyed running into Mark over the last few years after our boys left high school. He was always more interested in knowing how we were doing than talking about himself. He loved hearing what my kids were doing and talking about how William and Owen were. He was simply, a good guy and will be missed! Our family's thoughts are with you and the boys Robin.

In the few years that I knew Mark, I never heard him say a harsh word about anyone. There were many times, believe me, that he certainly could have, but he was always so calm and restrained. Sometimes, I'd say, "Mark, don't you just wanna yell and shout?", and he'd say, "Yeah, but it doesn't do any good." To which I'd say, "Ugggg, you're annoying". He'd just laugh and shake his head.

I'm going to miss his voice of reason, and his quiet smile.

I knew Mark, a little, seeing him when I would work out at 'The Courthouse' (athletic club). Not long ago I was riding a stationary bike, talking with Mark in a normal voice. I asked him how old he was. He walked over and whispered, 'Fifty-seven'. Seizing the moment I shouted back, NINETY-SEVEN!'
He quickly snapped, 'Put in your hearing aid, you old geezer!'
We both had a hearty laugh over that.

June 28, 2014

Robin and boys, I am so terribly sorry. I grew up with Mark - their house backed up to mine, and we had such fun playing football, "flash" - whatever all over our yards. Mark and our good friend, Eddie Rives, were 2 yrs younger than I, but carpooled several years. My parents were good friends of theirs, as we all were. This is just devastating. I don't know what our country has become. Please accept my condolences. I know you won't remember me, but I attended a wedding tea for you, hosted by Martha Carr, my mother, and others from our neighborhood. You hang in there. Prayers are with you and will support you. Love to all, Dede McKeithen Ginn (Emory & Dorothy McKeithens daughter).
